My parents thought it would teach me something if I got hit. It did. It taught me two things.
1- If you get caught, you get hit, so be smarter and don't get caught next time.
2- Whoever is the physically dominant figure is in charge. Valid thru sr. high school.

With my dog, I discovered that he only minded if he was within arms reach. I wanted my dog to mind at other times and not do bad things when I wasn't around.

Because of this, I realized that my child would be doing bad things if my reasons didn't make sense. I was a big recipient of corporal punishment as a child. It made me sneakier and considerably meaner. I tried a different approach with my child. Didn't want him to be like me.

Chances are you'll assualt your children, too ... I don't believe children learn anything from a beating -- except that use of force to achieve your goals is acceptable... Hey -- I wonder if George Sr. beat the snot out of little Dubya when he was a kid???
