Jumping from balloons and choppers

Recommended Posts

On my first jump it amazed me that there is no feeling of falling (i.e like a coaster). I figured it was because the plane was already traveling at 100+mph and the horizontal speed gradually transitioned to vertical speed, therefore no falling sensation. Am I full oF SH**, or is this the reason for no falling sensation. To the real question, Is jumping from a balloon or chopper more of a thrill, and do you experience the falling sensation?

Try exiting the plane in a sit and hold it until you reach terminal. I can almost guarantee you will get that falling sensation! Also, when I exit from a Cessna as opposed to a faster Twin Otter I get more falling feeling due to the low airspeed of the Cessna. So I would venture to say that you get good falling sensation from a balloon or chopper and also depending on your body orientation as you first start falling.

You, sir, are correct! The plane is travelling -- let's say 80 mph -- at exit speed... you accelerate to a speed of -- let's say 120 mph -- in freefall (if you are belly-flying). A change of just 40 mhp ... but the exit speed of the chopper is much slower, so your velocity increases much more when you you are in the air. However, I couldn't classify jumping from a helicopter as "more of a thrill" ... it's all good!!! It's just that helicopter and balloon jumps are rare for most of us...

I have to say it was a different feeling jumping from a chopper. we still had a little forward speed, but not a lot...
I am still looking forward to a balloon jump...
The coolest had to be jumping from a 2000+ tower, i had the falling feeling from that for sure...

...Did you have to climb? or did you have the luxury of an Elevator?....

Balloons and helicopters are pretty similar, but the ballon is nice a quiet. And the basket kinda moves around when you climb out. The lack of air and noise is awsome especially doing a 2 way cuz you can talk for a few seconds. Also a balloon jump, you don't always get to pick your landing zone which adds to the excitement.

You don't get the falling sensation like on a roller coaster. The roller coaster will descend faster than you and pull you down. That's why you feel like you're falling.

Ive jumped choppers and balloons and Ive never had the falling sensation on any jump. The balloon jumps were the biggest thrill since skydive #1 though as its totally quiet and still and its even scary to climb on the outside of the cage. A BASE friend of mine on the same jump said its as close as you can get to BASE without actually doing it.

I gotta do that someday B|

No no no! That's adding apples to oranges.

Your airplane exit speed is purely horizontal. The 80mph you start with is wholly irrelevant to your vertical final velocity. The two vectors are orthogonal (90 degrees from each other) therefore entirely independent.

The "falling" sensation is an effect of acceleration, not speed. And you accelerate at 32 ft^2 downward* whether you have horizontal speed of 0 or 80 or 800.

* Initially, of course.

The exit from a moving aircraft gives you wind speed and thus control of your body. When you exit a stationary chopper, you will flail at first. Try just laying back and falling off. The lack of control is disconcerting the first time.

My first still air jump from a chopper I had the gut sink feeling. To boot was about 4 seconds of no body control....it was crazy:S. I can still remember the feeling of stepping off the strut and that all to common "wind" was non-existant. The other half dozen still air exits I knew what to expect with no airspeed at first but still had the sinking feeling. Like others have said the balloon has to be the best. Quiet and peaceful, and it was freaky climbing up on the edge of the basket both times. And hearing yourself accelerate up to the normal roar of the wind when you let go is sweet! Can't wait till Rantoul again...
