phatcat 0 #1 December 27, 2002 It's Christmas, so I go home to the usual family festivities. I've avoided them for the few previous years for reasons beyond this post. But now I'm more grown up and matured, and I've been living "real life" and seeing how things really are. So... It's become a yearly comfort, I guess - sitting around doing the whole Christmas thing and opening presents and giving fake smiles and saying "Oh thank you!" And then it happens. The jokes start flying. The g**ks and the n**gers and blah, blah. I've never felt so ashamed. I guess it's always been that way, but it's only now I'm able to recognize it. I've made some good friends (something that I don't take lightly) that happen to be a minority race. And now, as they're telling these "jokes", I'm thinking about them, and I'm furious. But, this is my "family", so I'm supposed to just accept them, right?. I say fuck em. The whole christmas thing has always been that "feel good" time when you get together with family and all that shit, but this time I've left it just feeling pissed and resentful at those assholes who just HAPPEN to be related to me. And with that, I hereby say that I'm my own person, and I will live my life by my standards. Too my family - cyalaterbye.
quatorze 1 #2 December 27, 2002 I am lucky that I have a pretty openminded family, yet I have always found that no matter what goes down I seem to be closer to my friends then family, I think that it boils down to the fact that you have an active part in who your friends are and are not, family? You get no choice. IMHO I'm not afriad of dying, I'm afraid of never really living- Erin Engle

Skitzo 0 #4 December 27, 2002 I'm pretty lucky there too, My family is wonderful (almost bradybuchly). My only complaint is they don't understand why I HAVE to jump, so they ride me pretty hard about it, but they still love me no matter what. misskriss 0 #5 December 27, 2002 I grew up hearing those words on a regular basis from my Dads side of the family..It bothered me from the time I was able to understand what they meant. My oldest daughter is biracial...it totally changed their perspective on things.. I almost feel like she was brought into this world to teach them..because they have completely changed...my husband adopted her when she was four and we went on to have two more children. We still get questioned.." are they ALL yours.."..."so.....what is she..is she part hispanic..is she part black" I respond......she's a part of me.. SniperCJ 0 #11 December 27, 2002 My Dad's kinda the same way. Cant really blame him for all of it because my Grandfather was a HUGE bigot. Dad (and Mom) now live in East Texas in a small town. If you know anything about small east Texas towns, theres a large black population down there. Dad has a lot of black neighbors and a lot of them help him out with stuff: work around the house, feeding his animals when Mom and Dad are away, etc. Still when he talks in casual conversation he says "ya, that old ni&r down the street...". Its sad to hear it said so casually when you know he is talking about someone, who if he was white, would be called a friend. Im glad I didnt inherit THAT from Dad. Muenkel 0 #14 December 27, 2002 I hope this does not come across as not pc, but I have always found that generally mulato (sp?) people tend to be really attractive. It seems they inherit the best traits from each race. BTW, all 3 of your daughters are beautiful.

Jumpervint 0 #16 December 27, 2002 My family get together isn't until Saturday. There's always a comment or two about gays which curl my hair. I bite my tongue and tell my children that what we hear at family gatherings is not indicative of how I expect them to act. Vint. . . . . "Make it hard again."
