mattb 0 #1 December 19, 2002 I'm sick of shaving every morning. My electric razor broke about a year ago and I need to go get a new one. Prices range from cheap fo $200 - any suggestions? If it doesn't work well it's useless so I'm looking for a close shave, not the cheapest product. Thanks
SkymonkeyONE 4 #2 December 19, 2002 I have to tell you that I have never found an electric razor that gave me a satisfactory shave. I have found some that get close enough, but only after many, many repeated passes. In other words, it was not worth the greatly drawn out time it took to get that smooth shave. I can shave closer in one fifth the time with a Mach III and be out the fucking door. I hate to waste unneccessary time in the morning on stuff like that; preferring instead to sleep as late as possible and bolt out the door. Now, if you are wanting an electric so that you can do the same, and just shave on the way to work, then maybe it's worth it to you. Personally, though, I don't want to be distracted like that when I am driving. Chuck
mattb 0 #3 December 19, 2002 I agree that a regular Mach III is usually the best option. However, I can only do 4 or 5 days in a row before my skin starts getting mad at me. Also - I want something I can use w/o showering at 8:00 saturday night when I realize that a day and a half of uneven stubble looks horrible. Maybe you're right and it's hopeless but it seems there are a dozen ads an hour on tv for new razors and I was hoping one of them worked. Matt
DaMan 0 #4 December 19, 2002 I've been really happy with my Braun (one of the "self cleaning"), but I can't find any replacement parts like a new screen Z-Flock 8 Discotec Rodriguez Too bad weapons grade stupidity doesn't lead to sterility.
bwilling 0 #6 December 19, 2002 I had a Norelco rotary for about 18 years (longer than I had my now ex-wife, in fact my g/f before my now ex-wife bougt if to me for X-mas one year) and loved it... When it died recently, my kids bought me a new electric razor for Fathers Day, a Remington 'screen' type, a three head model (TCT3 I think)... don't tell the kids, but I liked my rotary a lot better. So my vote goes to the Norelco rotary... although I do agree with SkyMonkeyOne, no electric shaves as close as a real razor. lurking 0 #8 December 19, 2002 The "self-cleaning" Braun works fine for me and it´s a geek tool with display and everything. At least here in Germany (where Braun comes from) Spare parts are no problem. (except they are expensive)
Deuce 1 #9 December 19, 2002 Matt, I've got a heavy beard and I've used a Norelco rotary for about 12 years. If I use a blade razor, I get bumpy after the second day. If you use the electric EVERY day, you can get a pretty close shave, plus you can shave again that day without tearing your skin off. Nothing is closer than a blade, but you can use the rotary while driving your commute, that can be a timesaver. You can also shave at 5:30 before work and then go over the mug again at 6:30 that night before going on a date. I can't blade shave twice the same day, and not piss off the skin. narcimund 0 #10 December 19, 2002 Here's my rule of thumb for buying any gadget that I don't have enough information about: Buy the most expensive one that has NO fancy features. That means no unnecessary displays, timers, clear plastic, marketing hype, acronyms with "TM" after them, or bizarre computer-savvy connectors that seem like they might be useful if you could just figure out a use for them. It maximizes the change that the producers of the device spent their R&D budget on good design and solid materials instead of highly paid creative nerds brainstorming nerd-oriented features. I apply this formula to computers, cars, electric razors, stoves, clocks, stereos ... everything. And it almost always works! Guest #12 December 19, 2002 The Norelco is all there is for me. The remarks by others about the Norelco are truthful and accurate. Notice that the basic design of the rotary-head razor hasn't changed in over 30 years - it's hard to improve on perfection. A lot of reciprocating razors (like the Braun) make an annoyingly loud buzzing sound, and they vibrate. The Norelco makes a more tolerable whirring sound, and it doesn't vibrate very much, because the mechanism rotates instead of reciprocating. I lost my two-head battery-powered Norelco on my Rantoul trip, I'm sad to say, and I've been coping with blades ever since. My compromise is to shave every two or three days so that my face doesn't get irritated. That's not an issue with a rotary electric razor, and you can use it just before going out for the evening if that's what you want."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." RevJim 0 #13 December 19, 2002 First off, in answer to the original post, a simple, yet strong, NO. QuoteI can shave closer in one fifth the time with a Mach III and be out the fucking door. This is exactly what I thought. The Mach III was the best shaver I had ever found. Smooth, close shaves, and a second shave didn't kill my face. Well, you all know how much of a pain it is to clean these razors if you wait a few days to shave. There is nothing worse than having a few hairs stuck in between the blades, that you don't notice until the next shave. Ouch! Those couple of hairs make it feel like you tried to shave with a freakin steak knife! Well, a few months ago, I ran out of blades for my Mach III. I needed to shave right away, as my wife and I were going out for the night. I figured, what the hell she always used my razors without asking, MY TURN! I had bought her a Venus some time before, which by the way, is basically the womans version of the Mach III. WOW! Closer than the Mach, and Waaaaay easier to clean! The Venus has a very open top, and rinses clean quite easily. You women have been holding out on us! Needless to say, I now just buy blades for the Venus, for both of us.It's your life, live it! jfields 0 #14 December 19, 2002 I don't think the electric that shaves as close as a blade has been invented yet. Sorry to the marketers, but it's true from what I've seen. That said, my routine involves an electric razor. Tuesday through Friday: Norelco rotary. Good enough for work. Monday and whenever I want an especially close (or second) shave: Old fashioned double-edged steel razor blades on traditional razor. Saturday and Sunday: Shave? Hell no! It's the weekend. SatchFan 0 #15 December 19, 2002 I gave up looking for an electric razor. Blade is the ONLY way to go.
