Email addresses and Google

Well... it seems that now that the fourms are getting scanned by google for indexing any email addresses in the fourms are able to be spamed. I've only published my one email address in my profile and one time in the last 4 days in the General skydiving fourm. I had never recieved spam at that address for the entire time it was in my profile, in the last 4 days I've got 6 pieces of junk mail.

I think we might need to go back to the usenet method of (name at domain.com) instead of name@domain.com if you need to pass along a private email address.

but i'll keep an eye on it. since i don't use that addy for anything but my dz.com profile, it's a good control group.

As I recall, that's exactly how it works: the bots can roam the posts, but can't check the profiles. At least that's what I remember Sangiro telling us.

That is true for Google and other search engines. Only the forum main page, forum view and flat view post pages are "search engine friendly". That means Google won't pick up your email address unless it's on a post somewhere.

I'm not convinced there aren't email harvesters that can't crawl dynamic pages though....

I was trying to figure out why I was getting spam at this account all the sudden because I couldn't remember ever posting my dropzone address on the forums. So, I did a search just like Jessica did, and it was our very own Sangiro who ratted me out to the google bots! Look here:

One of my email addresses is in one post on dropzone.com, but the email came to another address multiple times which has never appeared on dropzone.com in a thread or in my profile. Just checked and I have used that address a long time ago on a couple newsgroups. So I am guessing dropzone.com isnt the one to blame.

Back on that link I posted a few posts up, there's a good paragraph by Sangiro that I think bears repeating here. It's an advanced way to send spam to your trash can and I just fixed mine to do it:

"So, to filter your spam. Go to the Options" menu, click on "Advanced Filters" and set up a filter to look for *****SPAM***** in the subject of all emails and filter those off to either your Trash folder or a special Spam/Bulk folder that you can create."

I just did a search and my address has never been posted in a thread... The email I received was the same posted by Jessica. What a crock!
