ECVZZ 0 #57 December 13, 2002 On a serious note, all ex wife jokes aside, the most shocking moment I've had was a decapitation in a head on, on the Rubidoux bridge in Riverside county. RFD arrived before we did. I was working as an EMT-1A with Goodhew paramedic in Riverside and we were dispatched to a T/C with injuries on the Rubidoux bridge. The Paramedic on the unit (Dave Nace) was first to the lead vehicle, (a pick-up truck) and I was hot on his heels. The FD had an extrication blanket over the occupants and one of the passengers had an arm exposed. Dave immediately palpated for an ulnar pulse, and finding none, he snatched the blanket back to check for a carotid. The kid had no head. The passenger in the middle and the driver both survived with severe injuries. It's been 22 years, and I still see it sometimes in my sleep. So I joined this volunteer FD at the age of 20y/o. One winter morning I got a call to go to a farm down the road. I was told to "take my time. There is no fire here but your scuba gear will be needed." Which I thought was weird. (I was the only one at the time that dove.) I showed up 25 minutes later with my stuff and was directed to this farmers dugout. Though the dugout wasn't iced over. Turns out that this farmers son aged 10 drove a snowmoble over the dugout and the ice broke. I was called in to retrive the young body. Its been 4 years this winter and I can still see the look that this young boy was giving.
