My dramatic stealth injury

Recommended Posts

Last August I had a reserve ride which ended in a sketchy landing. Ok, so it was a full-on terrible landing. Basically in my haste to get back to the ground I forgot how to flare and smashed in with some force.

I've had a slightly sore and stiff lower back since then and recently started seeing a chiropractor to work out the kinks. Well, the kinks didn't exactly go away quickly, so he sent me for xrays last week. The result? It turns out I have a broken back!

Yup, it's a tiny, healing fracture on L2. It's my first broken bone.

I can't wait to tell my mother. She'll be so proud.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

Dude...don't scare me like this. I picked up something kinda heavy about 3 weeks ago and my back has hurt ever since. I'm really thinking I should go to the doc.....but it's such a hassle!!! [:/] Anyway...sorry to hear that. How long will you be ground bound?

So what is the prescribed treatment? I'm sure skydiving is not on the list of things you can do. Sorry about that, hon.

Take care of yourself and heal quick.

Serious question: What's the treatment regimen? I stressed all my soft tissues from my ankles to my shoulder blades a couple weeks ago, and my back is still sore.

I just hate to go to the doctor to have him tell me I'm stupid and reckless and take some motrin, elevate and ice it and stop being stupid.

Are you just supposed to take it easy?

Er, oh... I hurt my back in a rather dramatic opening in August. It still hurts, though it's been diminishing over time. I've been avoiding going to the doctor about it. Are they treating it in any way, or do you just have to wait it out?

A friend of mine broke his back in a plane crash. The doctor at first thought it was broken several places then determined that a few of those were old injuries. Doc said that tons of people are walking around with broken backs and don't know it. Not too uncommon. Hope you're well on your way to healing. :)

Just thinking about that gives me shivers...no danger to your nervous system correct? Heal fast, and heal strong. :)

So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

The chiropractor says the healing is coming along fine all by itself and there's nothing in particular to do immediately. He did warn me not to "load up the spine too heavily."

I've made about 30 jumps since then with absolutely no problems.

I'll find out if he prohibits any more skydiving in a few days.

When I rolled a 4 wheeler on top of me over the summer,I was
on 4 different types of narcs for the pain cause they thought had a broken back and ribs.I stayed stoned for about 5 months.I was on so many painkillers that I was scared I was going to get addicted and quit takiing them and decided to just put up with the pain.

Chiropractors can help with back injuries, but the cure that got me back on my feet (and doing tandems) was a million sit-ups and hundreds of hours of stretching to pull my spine back into correct alignment.
The drugs they gave me were a total waste. The pills gave me a sore stomach, but did not affect the muscle cramps.
When I broke my foot, I did a couple more tandems that afternoon. Then I made the mistake of removing my shoe! It soon swoll up to the point I could not walk on it. I was back walking on it a week later, but was grounded for two months. Bummer!

so true :) about the hassle ...

i had 450 lbs on my neck doing my calves in my gym when i felt that something snapped
and something felt wrong in my neck. i was very sore for couple of weeks and had some
problem turning my head. one of my vertebrate shifted a bit and my muscules stiffened around
it trying to fixate it in place. eventually everthing went back to normal but i don't put anything
heavy on my back anymore. and i didn't go see any doctors. not very smart i guess :)

I think the worst neck injury I ever gave myself was on an incline bench. I picked myself up with my neck to slide over a bit....POP!! My neck hurt for weeks...[:/] I didn't think anything of doing it because I only had like 145Lbs up. I guess that's a lot for your neck....
