happythoughts 0 #26 December 9, 2002 Do you hear yourself saying "Back in '02, when I got my collich ejumacashun..."...scary ain't it? You're soon going to sound like us oldsters. "In the old days, when I was in college, we didn't have voice-recognition computers...had to type it in using one of those 'keyboards' with our fingers." "Wow...tell us another story" "Can you imagine..." When my son gets frustrated with the amount of time that it will take to complete his courses, I ask him two question. "How old will you be in 2 years if you don't go to college?" "What problems will you be trying to resolve that a degree would solve?"

SpeedRacer 1 #28 December 9, 2002 Man, I don't understand how people afford to skydive when they're in school. I barely had enough money to get by. I had no car, no stereo, shopped at Goodwill, etc. My parents don't have much money, so no help there. And student jumps are expensive!! Skydiving was not even an option for me until well after I graduated. Plus I was in this grueling molecular biology program, so I was working my butt off all the time anyway. I don't know how you college kids do skydiving at all, frankly. But anyway, my advice would be to just get through it (school). You're going to have to pay those student loans whether you pass or fail, so you might as well pass so you can get a decent job afterwards. PLFXpert 0 #29 December 9, 2002 Nope, don't feel old yet....especially at the DZ, being significantly younger than the majority of jumpers. I do feel old, however, when I see other 22-year-olds clubbin' it every night, etc. I'd much rather play pool and drink beer at a laid-back bar w/ friends, or rent a DVD, go fishing, surfing, etc. I'm usually in bed by 10 weeknights. I'm always up by 5:30. BZ reassures me though, that, that doesn't make me old, it just means I figured it out before everyone else. freefallin14 0 #30 December 9, 2002 I have been in your shoes trust me. Now 5 years later I hopefully will graduate in May. I think once you find something you like you will be much better off and more willing to put the work into school. I started in business, hated it, had similar thoughts to yours, then switched to aviation. I like my major, actually enjoy some classes, and look forward to doing it for a living (even though the pay sucks, the job market is terrible, and there is no room for a bad day). I went and talked to a career planning person when I knew I wanted out of business. Took some personality and interest tests, and ended up switching. I am sure they have something like that at your school, go talk to them. Bret
happythoughts 0 #31 December 9, 2002 I usually get to bed early, even on weekends, because I have fun stuff to do during the day. People who only have the weekend to party, do it all on one night. They drink too much, stay up too late, and then they sleep away their weekend. Usually when a contract ends, I take a couple of months off. I discovered that I could shoot pool or play racquetball every night, so why should I stay up til 4am shooting pool and ruin the next day.
PLFXpert 0 #32 December 9, 2002 Yea, most of the time, at a party or otherwise, the same thing happens from 2 a.m. on as what already happened from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. So why repeat myself? I'd rather have the extra two hours or so sleep before I jump or do whatever the next day.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
lgershen 0 #33 December 9, 2002 Lolie, I hear you. I have been in school for 5.5 years now (got my BS and now I am working on my MS). I'm very burnt out. But, I still manage to make the exciting trips to places like Florida or Arizona on occasion moreso than going to the dz every weekend. That way, it feels a little more exciting everytime you jump and you have a more memorable experience going on a "skydiving vacation" every now and then. It really stinks when you don't have much money. But, school really should take a priority. Remember, you need your degree in order to finance your skydiving. It stinks, but the priorities really should be school over skydiving (for the most part). In the end, you will be happy you did it. Remember, skydiving will always be there for you for your entire life. School will not be. Get the tougher part out of the way first. Best of luck! no7rosman 0 #36 December 10, 2002 I am with Tom. I didn't start skydiving until I was finished with school and got a good job. Then skydiving killed my motivation for work. I have a friend with the same problem and we discussed it. Skydiving makes everything seem less important. Not sure how long you have been in the sport, but it won't be long until your only friends are skydivers too. Buy a truck and trailer and drive around to DZ 's on weekends and vacations. Do you really want to have to do tandems when you are 60. Not bad to do them, but have to have to do them is a different story. I love this sport and have put a lot of thought into your exact plan. Mine is this...make good money until I have a livable RV with no loan and all my ratings. Then you could easily live for a long time with 50k in the bank, skydiving part time for a living. Keep expenses low.!!!! This is not unrealistic. Depending on age, you could still retire at 30-35 and live a comfortable life.
lawrocket 3 #37 December 10, 2002 Lolie: I must agree with skymama, TomAiello and others who tell you to pursue your education. It takes sacrifice, but everything that is worthwhile does! Look at AggieDave. You gotta respect him for what he's doing. He started college, and dammit, he's gonna finish it, despite the fact that it ain't exactly fun. You've just started college, and that is a good thing that many don't get to do. You probably worked your ass off to get to college. Finish what you started! I'm one of those skymama talked about: School was a royal pain in the ass, and and I was glad I got finished and got the hell outta there, but finishing school was one of my proudest accomplishments. Yes, even better than graduating AFF. I can afford this hobby now! In a few years you'll be employed, jumping on the weekends, holidays and sick days, and living life to the fullest. This may sound odd, but chances are you'll even get a sense of relief and enjoyment leaving the drop zone on Sunday so you can switch gears.p.s. TomAiello, you have set the blueprint for life! Hopefully in another 5 years, I can be living life as you've described! My wife is hotter than your wife.
