People who make more than 150,000 a year are taxed 50 cents on the dollar.....I think the gov't is getting more than enough of there money......

If you know someone who is paying half of their income in taxes, then tell them to fire their accountant!

50% ? hah. That is the base fed income tax deduction. Tip of the iceberg.

Most people pay 35-40%:
20% base federal income tax.
15% soc sec. (see note)
also additional Medicare deduction.

10% more if you are a self-employed 1099 person.

That makes it 50% if you run your own business.

Also remember that if you receive income from stocks, that is after the corp has paid taxes. Taxes on after-tax profit. Double taxation.

Note: Remember that when you pay 7.5 %, your employer is matching it with another 7.5%. If you are self-employed 1099 contractor, you pay all 15%. Either way, whether your employer deducts it and pays it or you pay it all, it is 15%.

After my CPA did all he could, I wrote a check for $20K to the IRS last year. People in the US already pay too much.

Maybe it's because he hits a little too close to home for your average American. Yes, he can come across as a bit of a ranting loony lefty but he can sometimes speak a whole lot of sense and tell people things they don't want to hear...

Gus

I think Gus has got this one nailed down here, Americans hate being wrong on any issue, Moore likes to fly these issues like a banner behind a 182 for everyone to see, and we have a rough time with that (even when we agree with him).

i think its more about "we have some serious extremes going on, tax THOSE guys at the top more, to provide for people who are in dire need of medical attention and just can't afford it"

That's not what our society is built upon. Despite the dysfuncationality of our health insurance system, dire medical attention is denied to noone.

Im no millionaire, but if i was and had to pay a few % more each year in taxes (i.e. i make $600,000 a year instead of $650,000) i don't honestly think i would give 2 hoots, as long as i knew that money was being appropriated well.

First, 75-80% of the income tax revenues are paid by 10% of the tax base (i.e. the rich folks). They are paying more than their fair share, and if you were consistently being barraged to pay more, pay more, do more, pay more, evil rich person, you would care about an extra $50K/yr. Those people didn't get wealthy by not watching their money.

Well, the wealthiest 1% of the country pay 24% of the federal taxes. Horrible, huh? Until you realize that they make 19% of the total income. After you figure in the largely regressive state and local taxes, the proportion of income the wealthiest pay in taxes is pretty similar to what the lower classes pay. It's hardly redistributive. I think what people seem to miss on both ends of the spectrum, is that when it's all said and done, the tax system in the US is reasonably egalitarian. If we had a flat tax on all income with a single deduction, this would be more apparent.

I am probably a left-wing-commie-pinko to some here (that's because I don't think Bill Clinton is related to Satan).

Hes not. He IS Satan. And Gore is right hand man that was the dumber brother that couldn't effectively do the job. These two clowns did more damage to the 2nd amendment than any other humans have managed to do in the history of our Constitution.

Michael Moore is a film director, and he's done some good flicks too (I like "An Eye for an Eye".

A good summary can be found here.

Here's his pic too....

You validated my argument. The lowest percentage of wage earners pay ZERO income taxes. Yet, they use most of the services provided by the government, using the taxes paid mostly by the top 10% of the income base in the country. I think they're doing their part.

Despite that, I still think an overhaul is due, and I agree, a flat tax would be much more appealing.

Personally, I would prefer a sales tax, and no income tax at all, but that's asking too much.

My parents paid 60% due to their tax bracket with CPA's from the Bank Of New York (who would rather see it all got into their bank!)

The top tax bracket is 39% and you really have to be trying hard to not avoid it. There is no 50% tax bracket. There was about twenty years ago. I think someone has been pulling your leg.

Another gauge could be Australia, and again, one of my friends down under may have to correct me, but after the enactment of significantly tighter guns laws down there, didn't gun related crimes surge in the double-digits??

No. Australia's gun-related crime rate has dropped dramatically. The laws you refer to were brought in after a 35 person massacre in Tasmania. However, although the gun-related crime rate has dropped, the overall crime rate has increased. Rape, assault and robbery are increasing to the same extent as before the laws were introduced, the criminals just don't use guns as often.

I think he's including the impact of social security, state income tax, and sales/gasoline/etc tax.

If I made $146000 I probably wouldn't turn down a raise -- after all, 50% of nothing is still less than 50% of something.

There is an old joke that a bad day is when you come home and find a "60 minutes" news van in your driweway.

It's kind of like that. People don't like MM because he is a dick. He comes up to people and pushes a mke in their face and asks them questions phrased like "What are you doing to stop the evil...something...conspiracy?" The question defines the issue as a problem before you get to answer and then it accuses you as a conspirator. If you refuse to be interviewed then he uses some character assassination on you. You are "hiding something from America" statements.

Anyone who treats me like that is a dick. That is why people don't like him. If anyone shows up at your office and demands to talk to you about and you don't want to talk to them. Then, they accuse you of participating and being a driving force in it, what would you think of them?

WOW! Source code is hard to uncrypt. Good thing I be gettin stoned! I'll say it out loud. I'm getting very, very baked. So, to the police:
"Come find me."
pukes.....I bet the trace on this has begun.
Which IP?
Where did it come from?
What is the real meaning?
Which user name?
What tone of VOICE did he use?
Which personality was he talking from?
What are the related topics Michael Moore spoke about?
Do we really care that much to discuss Michael Moore.

There's a button that works great on my computer for censoring out offensive comments. When I get really offended, I just turn OFF the computer. It does not matter what people tell me, or think of me. My life is more than a personality on a computer.
Peace,
Thomas

Even taking additional taxes into account, it doesn't make any sense. I mean, I could imagine a scenario in which someone could conceivably have a 50% tax burden, but no accountant would actually let that happen. And nobody would turn down a raise because they'd "have to pay more taxes." I call bullshit.

Because he offers no feasible solutions. He just points out problems with the current system in a way that makes people want to watch. He is nothing more than an entertainer.

BTW....I don't believe Clinton is related to the devil, he is married to her.:D

Gus, how would you know what makes up an average american??? spent any considerable time here? lived here?

LOL, I knew someone would pick me up on that! I'm quite confident that if Michael Moore turned his attentions to the UK he would hit a little too close to home for your average Brit - it's about challenging the status quo: that's just the definition of what he does.
