jose 0 #1 December 5, 2002 What are the tricks that you have all used in order to convince the underedumacated dipshit at airport screening that your rig is allowed as carry-on? I will be flying to Eloy and I hate to check my rig. So what, it any ideas do you have with all the new morons (protecting) us? Look out! Hes got a spork! quatorze 1 #2 December 5, 2002 Go to the website of the airline that you were going to fly on and go to there baggage section, look for allowed carryons, print it and use the evidence, Delta and United have specifics concerning parachutes saying that they are allowed on as carry on items I'm not afriad of dying, I'm afraid of never really living- Erin Engle
nacmacfeegle 0 #3 December 5, 2002 There should be no problem taking your rig carry on. As long as you:- Disarm the cypres and have the card handy, remove knives, bring it in a rig bag or similar, show up at check in in plenty of time, secure your reserve handle either with the chest strap (see recent article in the letters column of Parachutist) or a brightly coloured (obvious) pull up or similar. The rig bag is highly recommended, but only put your rig in it to keep it 'stowable'. If you get any odd questions, explain that is a very valuable piece of sports equipment. But most importantly be polite to the "underedumacated dipshit at airport screening". They may be dipshits, but they are powerful dipshits and can fairly spoil your day with very little effort. Theres a whole pile of talk about this here on the forums, do a search and check to see if I've missed anything.Nice tip Q, always good to have some insider information. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. skymama 37 #6 December 5, 2002 I carried on my rig last month when I flew out to CA. I stuck my rig in my gear bag. It went through the machine as quickly as my purse did. Their policies are secondary to the standardized federal polices. The good news is the same rules now apply to all airlines and airports - while it may take some time for all the employees to know the rules and for Cypress/Rigs to be added to the list you no longer have to worry about a specific airline or airport being more difficult than another. sunshine 2 #14 December 5, 2002 I carried my rig in my gearbag and had no troubles whatsoever going to and from FL. I was so nervous and scared i would be chosen for a random security check before boarding, but i got to walk right on all 4 flights. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! billvon 2,998 #15 December 5, 2002 I've found that the following help: -Putting it in a bag (despite the letter in last month's parachutist) -Not being too obvious about being a skydiver -Having the cypres card -Having supporting documentation (I've used the "I'm an instructor, I can't work if this thing is lost" line, which you might have to back up with a USPA card) The following can cause problems: -Wearing your "black death" T-shirt and carrying your helmet and rig with no bag -Making a stink, both before and after they stop you -Treating the security guy like an uneducated dipshit
FallinWoman 1 #16 December 5, 2002 QuoteI was so nervous and scared i would be chosen for a random security check before boarding, When I carried my rig on over the summer, I WAS stopped for one of the random security checks. I had to take my rig out of the suitcase it was in and show it to the guy. I asked if I could get it out so he didn't grab anything that shouldn't be grabbed. (Although I did have the reserve handle tied off) I had no trouble. I was calm and answered all of his questions politely. All he ended up doing was swabbing it for drug residue. ~Anne I'm a Doll!!!! homer 0 #18 December 5, 2002 I know they say don't take you helmet on with you but I have a Z1 full face and no luggage big enough to hold it without it getting smashed in the closing. should I go buy something bigger or save the money for a couple more jump tickets and carry the thing on. Jimbo 0 #19 December 5, 2002 Quote-Treating the security guy like an uneducated dipshit This will probably cause more problems than anything else you could possibly do, short of starting a bomb scare. These guys have damn near ALL the power in the airport terminal. Treat them respectfully, just like you might treat a fellow jumper or your best friend, and you're likely to have no problems. - Jim"Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. billvon 2,998 #20 December 5, 2002 >. . . Z1 full face and no luggage big enough to hold it without it >getting smashed in the closing. Get at least a bag! Protect that lens; they're not cheap. >should I go buy something bigger or save the money for a couple > more jump tickets and carry the thing on. A drawstring bag is like $5; I think the Square One helmet bag is like $40. A good gearbag is $100. I'd at least get the drawstring so I had some protection from the woman with the oversized wheelie suitcase. Or just get a used big backpack. Stores like REI often sell used stuff for very cheap. Lolie 0 #21 December 5, 2002 Quote I know they say don't take you helmet on with you Why do "they" say this? Is it because they think you'll jump? What's the problem with carrying it on? dove 0 #23 December 5, 2002 I always take my rig on in my gear bag. I've been stopped a few times, but after discussion with a supervisor who knows the rules it's never been a problem. I just clip my helmet onto my purse. I get funny looks but no heat about it. Fall in dove.
