Tricks to carry on your rig

Recommended Posts

I always carry my helmet on the plane because I have a Z1 and Northworst Airlines already destroyed one - pretty sure they ran over it with the airplane. They refused to pay for it.>:(

In september I flew from CA to TX. I had my gear in a bag. After the bag went through the x-ray machine, the security guard came to me and asked... "How many jumps?"... Then he showed me his USPA card, the guy had a D license! I didn't have any problems getting the gear in the plane, but I was a bit scared when he stopped me.

I had some heat flying out of Calgary last May. It was an 'unedumacated dipshit', who didn't care about the Cypres or anything else, just the fact I wanted to take a parachute on an airplane. Her supervisor was equally stunned. After a few trips to the ticket counter and back, I boarded the plane with the gear on my back (in a backpack), after being escorted through security by Air Canada personnel. I just checked it in Halifax on the way back.
I got nuthin

Many moons ago, Delta folks let me carry my rig on, but only WITHOUT the gear bag I'd so thoughtfully prepared.

The looks I got from other passengers :o were absolutely priceless.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

First off, I'd like to say thanks for the info. Secondly, I would like to specify I said that most of the people running security are dipshits.....well....because they are! But certainly, I didnt mean that my intention was treating them like one.
They are the kind of people that get a huge boner from ruining your flight just because they have the power to.
Quart, good idea on the printout.

Last question to run by ya. I was thinking that if I kept the rig out in the open at the scanning machine and not in a bag, they would be less likely to think that I am trying to get away with something. Also, having some Parachuting magazines would probably help convince if I put the in the same bag as the rig, (if I use a bag).

You will, more the likely, have MORE problems if you have it out in the open. Leave it in the bag, explain it, if the question arises. Having a couple Parachitists isn't a bad idea, though.

Just remember to remove your hook knives, ice picks, guns, explosives, laser guns, etc from the bag before you go through security...B|

I'm guessing you've never carried your rig on a commercial flight. You're getting really worked up about nothing. Just put it in a bag, treat it like any other piece of luggage, and get on the plane. I've taken my rig on at least a dozen flights, and at least 6 since 9/11 - it's not that big of a deal. Really. :)

I could wear my helmet on take off and when everybody looks at me I can say I'm a student and students are all required to wear there helmets on take off.

Ah, so when you get off student status you can leave your helmet off and change it into a projectile should anything happen?

I hope it was just the way that you wrote that, but please attach your helmets to something so it's secure.

I'd be interested in seeing that. Myself, when I had a Mindwarp I put it on my cheststrap, with my camera helmet I wear it until we get to an altitude where I would feel comfortable jumping without having to worry about the added time of figuring out what to do with it.

hey, I just went to the Northwest site to try and print up the list of accepted carry on items. Skydiving is not on it. I guess the cypres card will have to do.

But seriously since 9/11 i must have carried my rig on 30+ flights, most of the time in the open and never had a problem and only about 3 questions about it.

I feel the same way, I work for an airline and I see it all the time, but every once in a while there will be some TSA screener who is pissed because his/her wife/husband didn't let them have that piece of suasage/bacon and they need a power trip to feel better about them self. How does it goe? " An ounce of prevention..."
