Is a Cookie G3 Medium the same as a large?

2 different sizes..Maybe you should elaborate..
Medium is 20&3/4 to 21&1/2 and large is 21&1/2 to 22&1/4
I wear a size larger in cookie helmets compared to most other companies.

They are the same shell if that's what you mean. Different padding. The XL and XXL is the larger shell

The G3 is available in six different helmet sizes through padding installed in two shell sizes creating the most comfortable fitting helmet on the market. Using a tape measure please determine the circumference of head to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. Do this by placing the tape measure around the widest part of your head which will be above the eye brows and ears. Available sizes include: xsmall (51-52 cm or 20-20.5 in), small (52-53 cm or 20.5-20.75 in), medium (53-55 cm or 20.75-21.5 in), large (55-57 cm or 21.5-22.25 in), xlarge (57-59 cm or 22.25-23 in) and xxlarge (59-61 cm or 23-24 in).

If you are right on the edge between sizes, do you think it's best to order the larger size?

Probably the smaller. I'm supposedly on the edge but the larger size is too big.

Does anyone if I purchased the XXL can I get just the padding for the XL? Mine seems a little big now, especially around the back of the head.

with it on, put your fingers on either side of the metal hinge V shape on each side your your nuggin, pull them forward, and rotate them up.

I've been wearing the damn thing around my house trying to get it open. Yes it's quite ridiculous

Try this. It's about the G2 but the opening process is the same as the G3.

I recommend watching all of it but if you want to cut to the chase, start at the 4:00 minute mark.

Once you open it correctly a few times it's really quite simple.
