Sonic 0 #1 November 26, 2002 Anybody use this? Is it any good (esp for a linux newbie). Will be dual booting it with Xp Pro. Have also got VirtualPC which claims you can run multiple OS's at once.----------------------------------- It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone
R00tj00se 0 #2 November 26, 2002 Don't know about Mandrake but I've just started on Red Hat 8. Try these: www.linuxnewbie.org http://www.redhat.com/support/resources/faqs/rhl_general_faq/s1-install.html Here is a link to a http site for the download images for rh8 (there are lots of FTP sites but FTP is restricted at work and I don't have access any more) http://mirrors.kernel.org/redhat/redhat/linux/8.0/en/iso/i386/ Also, if you have an old machine you don't really use try setting up a floppy based firewall using this; www.coyotelinux.com That enough to get you started? bivar 0 #3 November 26, 2002 I have used Mandrake Linux earlier, and it is great for newbies. For more advanced users there are better alternatives; Debian, Slackware and so on. For newbies Mandrake is one of the best choices. You can run multiple OS's without VirtuslPC. You'll find tons of documentation if you do a search with Google. If you are thinking of dualboot with Linux and XP, let LILO (LInux LOader ? ) manage the boot. I have got several dualboot machines at my office. Mainly SuSE linux/Win2k.----------------------------------------
bwilling 0 #4 November 26, 2002 I'm running it both at home and here at work, and it's simply one of the best Linux distros going for the newbie user... lots of good tools to ease the transition from the evil empire of MS...I have my box at home set up to dual boot Mandrake 9.0 and Win2k, and it was actually MUCH easier and less trouble to get Mandrake installed and updated than it was Win2k, which failed to indentify and set up drivers for both the video and NIC (Mandrake got these right)... and then there's all those damn security patches to install for Win2k, and the countless rebooting... ARGH! "If all you ever do is all you ever did, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got."
