skygal3 0 #1 November 18, 2002 Last chance until 2099 to see the leonid meteor shower...this year scientists estimate there will be thousands of meteors every hour, the largest such until the end of the century. Despite the full moon the shower should be visible from Western Africa to Eastern US...too bad it's going to snow here. Not sure what my plans will be in 2099.... cgross 1 #4 November 18, 2002 Best viewing time on the east coast will be 5:30 AM, just before the sun comes up.
JohnJug 0 #5 November 18, 2002 Yup, tonight. Working from memory here, so might not be completely accurate, but there are going to be 2 peak periods. One I beleive is at 11 or 11:30 eastern, the second one is at 5:30 am eastern, 2:30 am pacific. You should be able to find news articles about it easily enough for more info on best viewing conditions, etc... You come from nothing. You go back to nothing. What have you lost? Nothing! quade 4 #11 November 18, 2002 QuoteLast chance until 2099 to see the leonid meteor shower... I've heard this a couple of times on the news and . . . it's totally bogus! The Leonids are an annual event. Happens -every- year just like clockwork. Some years are better than others, but not again until 2099? Gimme a break!quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Gimme a break! exactly...the only reason i can guess that they mentioned 2099 is because the regularity of the leonid intensity. sure it will be a nice little shower every year, but it is more of a meteor storm every 31 or 33 years if i remember correctly. maybe they think the next mega-storm will be in 99.hell yeah i'll be out there tonight watching, i just hope we don't get clouded out! b
Iflyme 0 #13 November 18, 2002 Last year I took the wife and kids outside, and we stopped counting meteors a 400 ... it was incredible! But this year -- it is raining heavily right now -- with little chance of any clearing, so we ain't gonna see squat...

Iflyme 0 #16 November 19, 2002 Quotebut it is more of a meteor storm every 31 or 33 years if i remember correctlyThe reason a "storm" is forecasted is becuse Earth will be passing through a particularly thick cloud of debris in the tail of comet Swift-Tuttle. And 33 years is how long the comet takes to orbit the star we live closest to.
