Zennie 0 #51 November 1, 2002 Wouldn't change a thing. I do it because it's fun, plain & simple. And like a lot of people have said, the thrill, for lack of a better word, is in flying your body. Doing things that you can't do on terra firma. The closest thing to fear or adrenaline that I feel now is when I do a swoop landing. That still gets my blood pumping. Gotta love ground rush & a nice long surf. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon

lippy 918 #53 November 1, 2002 IMHO, one of the best things about this sport is the people. I work in the oil patch, and spend my week-days with a lot of people who (generally), aren't that bright, and think I'm nuts for jumping. One of the things I like about the people in this sport, is that all of them have made a decision to take the thrill of the sport over the danger involved, and aren't concerned with 'what if my chute doesn't open'. If the danger was no longer there, we'd have many, many more stupid people in the sport, which would add to the politics/stupid situations on the DZ, and take a damb big chunk out of the fun of it. The thrill of jumping for me is the life-style, not the danger, but I'm not too sure I'd like what the sport would become if any old moron were in it.I got nuthin
Jessica 0 #54 November 1, 2002 Quotethe thrill does not come from the danger it comes from the freedom, Hmm, I don't feel very free while skydiving. In fact, I feel rather constrained -- there's a very specific action I absolutely must take if I don't want to die, and there's a very narrow window in which I must take it. And I still might die. It is hella fun though. If it were completely safe it wouldn't be what it is. It wouldn't be a subculture, it would just be like...like...well, I don't know. Like Six Flags on a summer weekend.Skydiving is for cool people only
bobsled92 0 #55 November 1, 2002 I"M NOT AFRAID OF HEIGHTS!!!, I'm afraid of WIDTHS>>>>>>> If there wasn't a little fear then those "F"ing mini van driving, cell phone using, run my motorcycle into a ditch, SOCCER MOMS would be jumping too! and I'd hate to have to shoot with one hand and pull with the other.(I just sold my last bike from my collection last summer because of SUV/mini van Soccer Mom bitches) ----Feel the LOVE...safer in freefall than the Freeway. _______________________________ If I could be a Super Hero, I chose to be: "GRANT-A-CLAUS". and work 365 days a Year. http://www.hangout.no/speednews/
flypunk 0 #56 November 1, 2002 but there is freedom, the freedom to chose and live the way you want to, yes i agree that there are restraints base on the course of action you have to take to live (or not to be dangerous) but that exists everywhere, stop signs, lights, speed limits...now if the fairy godmother of skydivers showed up and took it away... then .... ohhhhhh...it's like the autobahn of the sky no limits.... ... skr 1 #57 November 1, 2002 > if skydiving was completely safe, would it lose some of > its appeal ? I wonder if this is age related? I didn't start out for the danger, I wanted to swoop and soar and fall through the air and be out in space and be weightless and stuff like that. The danger was there though and I remember in my 20's and 30's having a taste for activities and situations where I had to do everything perfect or die. I believe it was the level of one pointed concentration required as much as the adrenaline. In fact I later began to wonder why I had to use a crutch like skydiving to get so concentrated and that kind of led off into meditation and stuff. But now I'm 60 and for the last 10 years, maybe 15 or 20, I really haven't liked the danger. I just like to swoop and soar and coach and play around. Staso 0 #59 November 1, 2002 i think we miss my point here :) i don't skydive because it's dangerous, or because it's cool because it's dangerous. my point is that all the feelings and emotions we receive from skydiving are multiplied by danger. and w/o it it would be more plain and less thrilling. wouldn't it ? in this case if it were completely safe it would lose some (not all of it) appeal. as goose941 said it's about dopamine :) watch speed w/o limits on discovery TLC channel this saturday. well, record it, 'cos you're supposed to be jumping !!! :) stan. -- it's not about defying gravity; it's how hard you can abuse it. speed skydiving it is ...
