The most depressing thing in the world is that Michael Crawford was in at 17th. That is like saying that there has not been one person per century since Christ who is better than an actor from Some Mothers Do Ave Em. I smell a conspiracy...

Yea! Robbie Williams?? Boy Gorge??
There cant be more than a few pop stars in a true 100 Greatest Brit comp!

People like Churchhill, Wallace and Madge, should be nearer the top!

My vote is for Robert Owen - Pionered a world-famous model community under the enlightened regime of social and educational activites. This guy invented holiday pay and a good education for all his workers! Paving the way, The year! 1800-1825!

>Ozzy Osbourne, the prince of darkness!!!

How could I forget! I'm so ashamed....
On a related note: I tried to watch "The Osbournes" last monday, but it was boring as hell. Ozzy does the prince of darkness stuff pretty well(and the songs are great), but I think he should've stayed off the TV.

>Shakespeare did write some impressive stuff

Don't tell me you've actually read Shakespear? Finnish translations or the original?

I just couldnt beleive they wasted 1 hour of programming yesterday on justifying why Di should be in that list.... come on.... but then again, the short list was created by a popular poll, so we shouldnt be surprised Robbie, Becks and Di are in the list... one of them will proabbly win...

But I was happily surprised to see Brunnel make the short list.... (Nacmac, I'm dissapointed you didnt inlcude him in your list.. what kind of enganir are you;))

Me? read that fully nah.... only this part "To be or not to be..." and that was original language!!! I tried to read more but with my poor English skill it did not work out too good....

Ummm Mr Tolkien was born in....(Insert drum roll please)..... Bloemfontein....South Africa:P

I must say that Newton springs to mind as one of the all time giants. Quite an amazing man.

BTW who was the Scottish dude who invented the steam turbine. There is a really amusing story attached to that.

hey Rem,
I figured the world would not really know who the funny looking guy with the big hat was...They might confuse him with Aggiedave!

My personal favourite is of course IKB, but look what they did to his finest creation...The SS Great Britain...a glorified coal bunker in the Falklands..>:(>:(>:(

Oh, and with you on the Di thing, but as a post modern socialist, I don't really hold with concepts like the monarchy anyway. And I am particularly unhappy with all their hangers on.>:(>:(
The French revolution should have crossed the channel!.;)

George Stevenson did teh 'Rocket' which was one application of the steam engine,
but it was James Watt, who successfully applied it to turning things or making them go up and down.....

For all you furriners & colonials, the BBC set up a website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/greatbritons

You can even vote (but please, please PLEASE.... not for Diana Spencer).

My one personal favourite in the "top 100" ws Johnny Rotten, the punk singer, whose reply to being included was something like "What the feck am I doing there, I'm just a singer" and then went on to argue that ALL the "pop-culture" nominees were undeserving.

Personally I voted for Darwin... The others were all great by being in the right place at the right time but Darwin was the only one in the top ten whose contribution transcended time and place.

Of course Diana wasn't great, popular maybe... But not great.
