What goes on in the combustion chamber of the engine, then

Same thing that goes on in the fridge to turn the light on and off. There is a little penguin in there.

The US Postal Service is using FedEx trucks?

They don't use many FedEx trucks, but they use a boatload of FedEx planes. A little over a year ago, FedEx and the USPS signed a multi-billion dollar contract to ship USPS freight on FedEx planes. It was a huge addition to the number of flights nationwide, increasing the total number by about 50%.

Actually Diesel fuel burns quite well! The nature of the fuel is that it self ignites under pressure (hence reaction of diesel fuel in your engine). So if the truck had full fuel tanks and they were crushed (compressing the fuel) it might self ignite causing a massive explosion.
Now we all know what diesel fuel and ammonia fertilizer do. However that is the weapon of choice of the Aryan Nation.
Why does everybody try to artificially revive the terrorist attack idea. Trucks and cars crash and explode. Whackos shoot people out of Chevy Caprice trunks, postal workers go postal, teenagers shoot their peers in high schools - its business as usuall, not a terrorist attack!

I reread the thread and I don't think anyone suggested it was terrorists - just that it might have been a combustible package. We are all aware there are unethical persons or corporations who would have no qualms with shipping material which is not supposed to be shipped in this manner (remember the oxygen generators). From the photo, the right side fuel tank appears to be intact. The left side is not visible, so if it was indeed a ruptered tank in must have been that one. On the face of it, the tractor appears undamaged, but again, the left side is not visible, so we have to leave the answers to those on site.

>hmmm the great thing about diesel is that is isnt flamable. Am I mistaken?

It's not as easy to light as gasoline when sitting in a bucket, but still burns quite well. There are periodic attempts to make fuels less prone to ignition - there's a famous video of one such attempt, where a 707 full of jelled JP-4 was crash landed in the desert. The fireball was very impressive.

Greetings from St. Louis.
Fed Ex truck did explode. Traffic is a nightmare from first radio reports. Both drivers in the truck were able to get out OK. No one was seriously hurt.
Here is a link from our local paper:

>I reread the thread and I don't think anyone suggested it was terrorists . . .

Well, the media seemed to initially assume that. "Officials said it was a blast from the impact of a traffic accident -- not a bomb -- which tore apart two trailers." I know! It was the Iraqis!

Seriously, people have short memories. Remember what people assumed when that A300 crashed in Brooklyn last November? The media was full of statements like "The FBI has said there is no evidence so far of terrorism, but are investigating leads." If a 737 crashes in DC due to a rudder hard-over in the near future, you can be sure there will be more statements about terrorism than about the rudder hard-overs that caused 737 crashes well before 9/11.

I hate to say this, but in another few years there will be another incident and everyone will worry about _that_. A militia in eastern oregon will blow up a building, and for the next six months other accidents will be reported as "Officials said no links to any militias have been identified yet."

okay, now i'm confused. CNN says the truck got cut off and went off the road, and Foxnews says the driver fell asleep and hit a light pole that started the fire. either way, the trailer is broken in two and the tractor appears mostly undamaged. The fuel tanks are on the sided of the tractor.

[ex-commodity relocation engineer mode on] the only scenario i can come up with is that the trailer had a propane heater (not uncommon for temperature sensitive freight), and perhaps The fuel tank for that is what set off the explosion. This tank would probably be located somewhere under the trailer. [/ex-commodity relocation engineer mode off]

I thought I was clear in saying no one in this thread had suggested it was terrorists.

Bill, have you ever heard of post trauma? Two months after 9/11 a jetliner crashes in New York. I think it would be natural to first think of terrorism. It's sought of like after being in a car wreck, you tend to be a little jumpy and tense up when you have a close call again.

As for the fedex explosion, I don't blame the Iraqis. I think it was a vast left wing conspiracy.

Planes crash everyday all over the world... the only time anyone mentions terrorism is when *insert TV station* has a dozen reporters on the scene to cover it LIVE, thus its an important news story to interupt other things. They have to have something to keep it intersting... like a possible terrorism link to keep interupting the regular programing.

Of course; it's nearly a survival mechanism. Like I said, people have short memories. That's not necessarily bad, but it does mean that to get at what _really_ happened you have to learn to ignore a lot of what the media, the public and even the government says shortly after an incident like this.

Isn't there a book by that name?
