What are you labeled?

Recommended Posts

I was out with the guys the other night and started talking about stereotypes and naming schemes everyone has for everything.

Someone who playes a lot of sports>Jock
Executives> Greedy
Your Boss>Asshole
Computer Techs>Geeks
Politicians>Liars/ Untrustworthy
Celebrities> Stuck Up/Snobby
Musician>Unitelligent
Someone Popular> Jerk to those who don't know them

Talk Show hosts> Gossip Queens/Kings
Salesmen> Crooked
Mechanincs> Cheats
Contruction Workers> Portuguese
Skydivers>Crazy/Death Wish

Isn't it strange how no matter what you do it all seems to be tied in to something negative?

Why can't people just have some optimisim and positive outlooks on things for a change.

It's the middle of the week, sorry I am having one of my usual idealistic outbreaks.

You're overlooking something, and that is that those stereotypes get established for a reason. Biases don't spring from nothing; they have a basis in truth, however small.

Take show-biz types, for example. Most of the celebs I've met or interviewed have been very warm, sincere people. However, a couple of them were first-class jerks.

It's human nature to remember the negative stuff, and the tendency to tar all with one brush is a natural tendency as well.

All the good, positive, charitable works that are done won't be remembered, but the one time that person lost their cool will be the moment they're identified with. Typecasting happens. It's human nature, and it's almost inescapable. [:/]

There is also a tendency to marginalize that which one envies or resents. The stereotypical titles that the categories describe are often born of a sense of inadequacy on the part of the one doing the name-calling.

And as with most things, every barrel has its rotten apples. :o

I hear what your saying, it's just so sad. I have some friends who work over at IBM and when they get introduced to people right off the bat they hear

"Oh wow you must be loaded"?
Or "Can you fix my computer"?

People need to relax a little and have some fun.

[scenario]
Every friday your very hot woman boss encourages casual firday and wears seductive clothes and decides thoses are the best days to give you feedback.
[end scenario]

I think the stereo type would change that mentality of bosses being pricks pretty quick. No?

I get the "smart" title until they get to know me cause I teach. When they find out I jump I get ""crazy woman". I also get "bitch" at times. To which I reply: "It's Ms. Bitch to you, put a handle on it."

Hmmm... I don't know what the DZ bunch call me yet, not to my face anyways!
But I have been called(!) a lot of things... sassy, stubborn, crazy and (on occassion) ditz and weird. The last 2 are usually 'cause somebody doesn't have a sense of humor - or doesn't appreciate mine:D! - Lila.
