swarley 0 #1 October 20, 2002 Curious, Who closes the door of a cessna after the jumpers leave? Don't think the pilot can reach it. Know that when I jumped there was only the pilot left. Do they leave it open? Steve
brianthomas1966 0 #3 October 20, 2002 Didn't the pilot tell you to close it on your way out! the pilot "slips" the plane. (slides the plane side ways in the air) wind resistance on the door goes away and it drops to within reach of the pilot. a pilot can give you the details. i'm not one. narcimund 0 #4 October 20, 2002 Different planes will have different mechanisms. Some have a 'remote control' with a linkage to the latching mechanism. Others don't latch open but just use airflow to hold it open. On those the pilot can cause the door to drop by changing the angle the plane meets the relative wind. blewaway5 0 #5 October 20, 2002 Nah, the pilot can reach just fine. Next time you're on the plane check out the top left corner of the door and you should see a little spring loaded latch type thing. Assuming a 182, by the way. Truman Sparks for President

On the Otter you need to step onto the camera mount, roll the door, and be sure to lock everything up and check and make sure you turned the coffee pot off. ____________________________________________________________ I'm RICK JAMES! PLFKING 4 #10 October 20, 2002 Quote the last guy /girl out has to hang on the door to close it! You are too funny....I think jump #25 or #26 was my first out of an Otter. I was last out, because I was pulling high and there were no tandems. The LO told me "You'll be last out -- so close the door behind you." All the way to altitude, I was trying to figure out the best way to do that....the whole time thinking I'd probably bang off the side of the plane and break my arm or something equally painful. I finally broke down and asked him at 11K. His grin, and the laughs of the jumpers around me, advised me that I'd been had yet again. Don IHJ#

C'mon, admit it! A really nice guy showed up at my DZ and did his first hop and pop from our Otter. We tell him the lights are broke. Blue light comes on (open the door) and everyone was "GET OUT!!! OMFG GET OUT!!!" and he couldn't get out of the plane fast enough! Amazingly he managed to make it back by getting small! ____________________________________________________________ I'm RICK JAMES! PhreeZone 20 #14 October 20, 2002 >Assuming a 182, by the way. Unless you get a creative A&P that decided that a normal door just did'nt seem right on a 182 and installs a sliding Lexan door that slides like an otter door. Then all you have to do is reach over head and shut the jumpers out while they are still on the step. blewaway5 0 #17 October 20, 2002 HAHAHAHA, reminds me of a story. We had a new guy who just got his liscense and we were taking him up for a four-way, or so the story went. We had him out first to hang and instead of following him just closed the door once he was hanging. It was like one of those credit card commercials: jump ticket, $18; beer for the party later, $50; look on suckers face, priceless. swarley 0 #24 October 20, 2002 "As far as closing the door, my money is on the gremlins too. " THANKS everyone for the replies. Guess there are different options for closing the door. Like the "Slipping the aircraft". CoolAs far as the gremlins, i don't think they close the door. Think they jump also, and cause canopy opening problems sometimes.
