skeletor 0 #1 October 14, 2002 I just got a statement from the hospital where I was "repaired" (compound leg fracture and back fracture back in July). The total cost: $26,162.72 Now, this is just for one surgery and 5 days in hospital. I had another surgery at a different hospital and I'm going in for a third on Wednesday. note also, this does not include the $1500 ambulance ride. so, my questions... Does everybody realize how much it costs to get fixed ? (in the US anyway). Does anybody out there jump without insurance ? be safe, rich. ps. riverside county only charged $8 for an hour of Nitrous Oxide, you can't even get a 10pack of whip-its for $8. Shotgun 1 #9 October 14, 2002 Hey skeletor, You should post a picture of that lovely leg of yours... Not only should you not jump without insurance, you also shouldn't jump without a brain Just kidding dear ;-)
tigra 0 #10 October 14, 2002 You also have to keep in mind all the follow up care. Prescriptions, visits to the orthopedic surgeon, x rays, new casts, physical therapy, and what happens next year when you want all that metal OUT. All of that is so important to your recovery, and without insurance (or a lot of money) your options are limited. I don't even know the final tab on my ankle, but I'm sure it was close to $50,000.00. Thankfully, my insurance covered all but a few "co-pays". maura
skeletor 0 #11 October 14, 2002 And you should never jump when you only have finger trapped lower brake lines :-) ok, so I'm an idiot, but an idiot with insurance... -rich.

homer 0 #14 October 14, 2002 What's insurance? The only insurance I have is VA disability related or I should say the only medical I have. Aren't the premiums a lot higher for skydivers? CSA #699 Muff #3804
tigra 0 #15 October 14, 2002 Insurance companies can be a real bitch to deal with, but it beats the alternative. I know mine put me through a lot of grief after I broke my ankle. But that's a whole other issue!
SudsyFist 0 #16 October 14, 2002 Quote The only insurance I have is VA disability related if your dd214 says you were a good boy, then you've got va health coverage for just about anything, actually. i had something come up whilst not covered by conventional health insurance, and was promptly taken care of at a local va hospital. *whew* NOTE, however, that copay and other out-of-pocket expenses are determined based on your prior year's tax return, despite your current financial status. SCREWED, i was! (still better than paying in full, tho!) steve
homer 0 #17 October 14, 2002 I do need to look into just what kind of VA coverage I do have. I know I need the Insurance just in case anything does happen. My family wants me to give up jumping until I do get it. CSA #699 Muff #3804

VA Health Care Eligibility (note priority group 7) just stop by your closest va hospital and pay a visit to their admin office. they'll give you the scoop and register you in just minutes, believe it or not! steve
homer 0 #22 October 14, 2002 I know i'm covered for all my cancer treatments and fallow up as a result from their stupidity when I was on active duty. But will I still be seen at a local hospital verses driving 45 min. to the nearest one if I were to get injured. Hows my color now? ChileRelleno 0 #23 October 15, 2002 I don't jump without insurance... I'm currently recovering from a fractured tib/fib and the total cost so far (its not over yet, still have rehab ect to go thru) is over $21000.00 and counting. I have good insurance and so far my out of pocket has only been about $2000.00... Pretty exspensive jumps we've had... QuoteBut will I still be seen at a local hospital verses driving 45 min. to the nearest one if I were to get injured. now that is something about which i'm not sure -- va hospitals are like mcdonalds out here, so it's a non-issue for me. perhaps their web might have more info? steve
