Have you read any of the Jean Auel books series starting with Clan of the Bear Cave? I know the movie was really bad but there is 4 books in the series.

The fifth one came out recently. I was quite disappointed, to the point where I didn't finish it. I guess my expectations were high because I loved the first four.:(

I know, I read the fifth one too, and was disappointed, but I did finish it. It was a huge book too!

i'll have to check that one out. but i would probably need to brush up on the talisman since it was the first book i ever read. i started to re-read it not to long ago but then i saw the forth book in the gunslinger series and started reading that one instead.

Yep. Several of Kings books tell parts of the continuing Dark Tower story. It's sort of like King's legacy. These are all the books that tell some part or piece of the Dark Tower story:

The Stand
The Eye of the Dragon
The Talisman
Black House
Hearts in Atlantis
The Gunslinger
The Drawing of the Three
The Wastelands
Wizards and Glass
And coming soon: Wolves of the Calla
and: Song of Susannah

All of these novels contribute to the Dark Tower Story, but the ones in red are ones that contain such a large importance that the Dark Tower Story would be stunted without it.

Reading them in the order that I listed them would work well for continuity as well. :)

Whaaaaaa? How come? I liked it fine. It wasn't as good as the fourth one, certainly, but I thought it was pretty darn good. Maybe I was just really hungry after waiting 12 years, though.

Neil Stephenson's stuff if very good. Cryptomonicron (sp) is a great rambling page turner.

My favorite author currently is Iain M. Banks, Scottish guy, like NacMac:ph34r:. Any of his "Culture" novels are cool. Escapist space opera stuff. Try "Consider Phlebas".

Or study.

Nah...

I wish we didn't have to wait 12 yrs. for that fifth book to come out! I waited patiently for it to be printed. It was a good book, it was kind of 'draggy' though. Does anyone know if she plans on writing another in the series?

Yeah, it was originally conceived as a six-book series. The next one will wrap it up. I'm willing to cut this last one a little slack, because it was mostly a setup for the climax that's coming.

I hope we don't have to wait another 12 yrs. for it!!!!

It picks up a lot of the Dark Tower themes again. Have you read Eyes of the Dragon by King? Antagonist is Randall Flagg, also Walter also the Man in Black. King is good about running threads between his different stories

i think i have read this one. was the king poisened and his eldest good son framed for the crime and locked in a tower while his worthless younger son became king? i use to read alot of his stuff but i haven't really read any books in the past couple or 3 years.

i've read most of the books on that last almost in that order. haven't read the black house or hearts in atlantis. i think i'll read black house next. insomnia also ties in to the dark tower story a little bit. i think if you would have included it in that list it would have probably been in black.

Enders Game is definitely one of the best books I have ever read!! Rumor has it that there is movie in pre-production right now based on this book.

Another highly recommended book is “Armor” by John Steakly.

And of course anything by Robert Heinlein. Find a book with Lazarus Long in it and you cant go wrong.

Dave,

If you like Tom Clancy, you would probably like Robert Ludlum. The Bourne Identity, Bourne Conspiracy, and the Bourne Supremacy are all good. Also, The Matarese Circle, and its "sequal" are really good.

Also, try Stephen King's It or The Stand. Those will both keep you busy for a while. The Stand is the classic battle between good and evil. Its really long but holds you and keeps you interested from start to finish. And of course, The Talisman and Black House have already been mentioned. Do yourself a favor and read the Talisman first. You will enjoy Black House that much more. I love the Dark Tower series, but I think that will drive you nuts til he finishes it! Just be warned if you pick up The Gunslinger.....

The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien.

I'll second that, it's one of the most well written books I've ever read.

Also, every Marine needs to read "Bridge of Dong Ha" Col. Ripley's son was on my lacrosse team at VMI so I was able to meet him a few times. Pretty outstanding guy.

Another great: "A Sense of Honor" by James Webb.

Edit: Those are three books that you will not be able to put down, especially since you're a jar head. Others listed on here that are my favorites are Dune and Ender's game.

Making a movie out of Ender's Game? That's cool but I'm going to be pissed if they mess it up.
