End Users

Recommended Posts

Yep. Fortunately I get to split my time doing back end stuff, so it doesn't get too bad. Usually it's installing/upgrading software, or sometimes explaining the difference between the power button and the reset button.

The stuff that end users don't see is way more interesting though. Ever log into a Solaris box to fix something and find a file called 'You-GeT-Owned'? I did today. That's bad.

I did computer support, and i was one of the two IT folks in the department who LOVED it!;) The rest of them were all boring old men with little social skills, but the users loved it when i'd come around cause we'd sit around and talk stories, i would talk TO them and not down AT them...And most importantly of all, they loved me so much they'd bring me donuts, brownies, and offer dates with their daughters!!! :)
can't wait to pay off the school debt so i can go back to a GOOD job!:P

Yes, my company, WebHostWorks.net, does a lot of enduser support. Many of our hosting clients are very small businesses that need hand holding to set up email or upload their websites. Unlike all the big web hosts out there, we answer the phone and talk you through the problem. You're twice as likely to get one of the owners of the business (2) than an employee (1) although to tell the truth our employee is better at talking customers through installs!

oo. ouch.

Yeah. They also got that system's twin sister in another building. After I took it offline, I poked around for an hour or so and couldn't find a root kit. It could be a really good root kit, or it might just be script kiddies getting their rocks off.

The old administrator got kicked to the curb a few months ago for letting shit like this slide, and we are still finding problems. Those Sun boxes were running Solaris 4.something and probably hadn't been patched since the 20th century. Right after he left, we found out that the reason backups on a lightly used database server took so long was because the system had been (surprise!) hacked through a known IIS vulnerability and we were also backing up 20 gig worth of warez every night. :S

We went from v2.6 to 8 (and should be on 9 dammit!). And wow, that is fscked, backing up warez...(feeling paranoid, will be looking at latest patches tomorrow morning at work). heh. :)

how does e-mail support or servers cause a threat to the US?

because we do a lot of defense contracting and I could have read mail from any user on the system.
that isn't even the half of it, all foreign nationals are being moved to a seperate building. don't want us foreigners mixing with the locals.
Hmmmm, aren't all the terrorists being caught now US citizens ?

When the first company website came online, it took me all of about 25 minutes to hack into it and modify the front page from home. I wasn't part of the project so I didn't have any knowlege of the setup. The web group wasn't too pleased. Their "security" guy was canned pretty much on the spot. Got offered the job but didn't take it. Didn't want to be that high profile. Those people don't tend to stay around long.
