landing off

Recommended Posts

I landed off at my DZ this weekend. I landed off before a long time ago and I have not landed off at the other DZ I jump at so far;).

Some people laugh and make remarks about me when I land off. :P

I was under 1000ft and no where near my DZ for a set up for final I had not cleared some trees that line the DZ.

I choose to land off because I knew for sure that the feild underneath my feet was ok and clear to land I KNEW I would be ok if I landed there. As for trying to make it back to my DZ I was not too sure. So I stayed above an alternative landing area.

It was a bitch to walk in and I hated that but I did WALK away and those who make fun of me for landing off need to save the snikering for those jumpers who try to make it back and end up getting hurt because they turn low to avoid a tree or land in a tree or whatever . I know it is safer to be in the landing area.

However: Golden Rules......
Remember golden rule # 1 and #2.:)
I should of made it back and had time considering we were the first out but I think I did a 180 away from the DZ when I was getting out of the clould.(I tryed to track out of in freefall but pull time came and tracking had to stop) I really wanted out of the cloud and I got out as soon as possible I did a sprial and flew to the edge as I saw it. I back tracked (but I could see where I was going now:)Anyway. Sometimes we have to land off. I was taught at the Dz I landed off at, that at 1000ft. You need to stay where your at if you are not yet above your primary landed area. Thats what I did.:)I made it back on the next one;)

Good for you! You've heard me say this before, and will hear it again... "It is better to walk a long way than get carried a short way."
At a dz I used to jump at, the main landing area was 2 acres, next to it was the "south field" that was 3 acres. Separating them was a 3-foot high line of palmetto bushes. I saw someone land downwind and break their leg rather than do a nice turn and land safely in the south field because they wanted to "make it back". Walking 200 feet isn't that bad when compared to not walking for 2 months.
Good call. Usually, the people who are snickering are the least qualified to judge anything.

WhenI land off I have good reasons . I always have my head on a snivel.

And that's all that matters, you knew what you were doing, you made a decision and stuck with it. Screw the naysayers.. If anything, I feel sorry for them since it seems they're the ones who have forgotten what it was like to have low jump #'s and not be so sure of their decisions. And even sadder that they need to make themselves feel better about theirselves by criticizing you.

Good Job!!!
I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. eat sushi, get smoochieTTK#1

Jumped in Hawaii a while back. Loaded my canopy a little higher than everyone else loaded their's. Figured at 1000 feet I might make it back, or I might not. Decided to take the only out around (if you've been there, you know it was the beach next to the Polo Field). Everyone else made it back. Returned to snickers all around. Yep, I got a nice little swoop of the waterline, drug a toe through the sand, and landed at the nude beach (it was empty). What was I thinking?;)

Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

So you walked in. You WALKED in!!! You weren't carried in, you weren't all muddy, you didn't tear your gear or jumpsuit. How's the old saying? A good landing is one you walk away from, and a great one is where you get to use the airplane (or rig) again.
I've landed out there, too. And at most of the other DZs I've jumped at. I PLF'd my next-to-last landing at Spaceland, also, and walked away smiling. BFD. If you walk in with a smile on your face about the great jump you had, then you take most of the wind out of their sails. Now THAT'S fun!

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

I've gotten the same thing forget about what they say because one of these days they too will have an off DZ landing. I myself have had 3 in the last 100 jumps only due to high winds and bad spots. one of those being my own spot.

I landed safe. This feild was a bitch to walk through (it is the field in back of the trees and there is a small old bridge to cross over) That is not a fun place to land. I had lots of cuts. The twigs I was walking over were up to my ass and I of course did not want to tear my rig so the canopy was above my head. But Im ok.:)

Kinda sounds like the DZO at my second home DZ who ripped a toe off at the Lost Prarie Boogie in Montana a couple months back. It was a pops jump and he tried to make the DZ on a down wind landing in sandles. He hit hard after catching a foot a rock.
