gear bags - which is the best?

Recommended Posts

Hi all - i know this might be best suited in the gear section, but im not sure if a bag is actually a piece of gear as such so i'm posting it here.

I need to pick up a gear bag asap, but im not sure what to go for - can you guys tell me what you like about your gear bags, and what you think are good features to have on them so i can make my mind up?

Thanks

I got mine from square one, the biggest that they had and it is wonderful...rig, jumpsuit extra change of clothes, pair of tennies and pair of sandals, log book extra junk... hell everything but a helmet and all for a reasonable price.

I paid extra to have the part in the front that zips off into a smaller backpack, and in a year and a half, I've never used it that way. So, I would suggest getting a big one, that's about the best feature I can think of. And, of course if you want to be cute, make it all matchy matchy with your rig and jumpsuit. ;)

I bought mine at Walmart, and it cost me $15. It's big enough for two helmets, three jumpsuits, two rigs, and all my other crap. I can't imagine ever using a "Gear Bag" - they're just so tiny!

I'm all about matching colors, but the only advantage I can see of a real "Gear Bag" is the custom colors...

I'm with you. You can get something huge, with a handle and wheels, for less than a "skydiving" gear bag. It gives better protection, easier to haul around, and if you look hard enough, you can find good colors. Wal-mart is a good starting point.

I walked my ass in to Wal-Mart and bought a big sports bag for under $20. It holds all my gear (jumpsuit, helmet, rig, couple extra shirts, shoes, pair of shorts, etc) AND it has wheels so I don't have to actually carry anything. Not to mention that I bought it in my colors (green and black). B|

thanks guys, i dont know why i wasnt looking at regualr bags - i guess i immediately assumed a gear back would offer better protection.
Unfortunately we don't have Walmart in the UK, but i'll be checking some type of equivalent store.

well we have somewhat Walmart-ish like equivalents, but no way near as big or as cheap.
Walmart actually bought out a bunch of huge stores here a year or so back, but they are still yet to convert them to the full Walmart experience.
I do miss getting lost in Walmarts though and finding things i didn't even know existed and then finding out they cost 99 cents or something equally ridiculous.

several people at my DZ use a regular suitcase on wheels for their gear. You can get all sizes and colors plus they are flat when you open them up so none of your stuff falls out.

Trips to Wally-world (Wal-Mart) get exciting in college, tell someone that you're fix'n to go to wal-mart and you'll get a carload of people that'll go with you. Scary, but then again, they have ramen soo much cheaper then anywhere else...

"No Wal-Mart? Jesus, how do you survive?"

Yup ya got to be hard to get by in Britland, we are taught basic survival techniques from an early age......

However Wal Mart just bought over one of our largest chains...ASDA, so no more 'living off the land'.
Gawd bless Wal Mart!

Anyway Dave, GET TO THE GYM!

Yeah, and you have to miss out on the overweight women in the spandex shorts and bedroom slippers shuffling along and yelling at their children too! :P

THe hard cases are better if you have to haul your rig around on aircraft, and want to check it too......
And they work out around the same price as a rig bag, especially if you get them from Wal mart...hehehe...

But Newbie, if you want a rig bag, any of the usual gearstores in the UK will do one off the shelf, or contact Symbiosis at Headcorn for a custom one.

Well Derek bought me a VERY VERY cool one from REI, it has the small backpack that zips off the front, it it has the handle and wheels like a pilot bag and it also can convert into a day pack backpack with the waist belt (for lugging up 3 flights of stairs to my apt). plenty of room in the main compartment for my rig and jumpsuits. plus the extra pack for the logbook and pull-up cords. I keep my gloves alti and goggles in my helmet bag that with all the snaps and stuff on the gear bag is easy to attach to the top.

I also have a square one bag that Derek stole for his BASE rig.
Fly it like you stole it!
