Did you know your S.H.I.T?

Recommended Posts

Ever wonder where the word SHIT comes from? Well, here it is: Certain types of manure used to be transported (as everything was years ago) by ship. In dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a byproduct is methane gas.
As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could(and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!
Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was discovered what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term "S.H.I.T" on them which meant to the sailors to "Ship High In Transit." In other words, high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.
It could be true... who knows? :S

shit, [Middle English, from Old English scite; akin to Old English scitan, to defecate] (ca. 1585) also akin to OHG (Old High German)scizan to defecate.

try hard enough & you can make initials out of anything. I read another one where they said that fuck stands for "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" or "Fornication Under Consent of the King" also total BS.

I think the same thing is true for the word shmuck.

In fact, Yiddish apparently has a lot of different words for penis. shmuck, shvantz. etc.. maybe there's a Jewish skydiver online here who can list them for us?

ok I have one for ya..

ASSLOAD or BUTTLOAD what are the meanings of these two?

We had a small talk about those two last night in the pub.

My thoughts are {what I was told as a child}.. It was a word or group of words from the settler days. Most settlers didn't have horses {the poorer ones} so thet would rig up a mule, donkey or ass an head to the nearest town for supplies. Most of the time the settler/farmer while in town would stop an visit the saloon for some refreshments. A conversation would arise an then someone would remark "You sure have an assload there" Talking about the mule or donkey..

Now please correct me if I'm wrong?

what about the term "shitload"? as in damn i just bought a shitload of food? can be used to either describe a nonspecific quantity of something, or, it is also commonly known that a shitload means you have 8 of something. a couple=2, a few =3, a bunch =4, a shitload=8.

Probably not true for the same reasons that FUCK isn't an acronym for Fornification Under Consent of the King.

See THIS.

Actually, after doing a little checking . . . see THIS.

yeah, everyone knows it comes from "plucking Ewe" in the medevial times:)

A firkin of beer is 9.8 gallons. A hogshead of beer equals 63 gallons; two hogsheads of beer is called a butt. So a buttload of beer is 126 gallons.:)
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.
