1 for being declared dead from the first jump:5:1 (for the first jump)
First jump of the day I used my work rig (370 main) and the slider would not come down. Was ready to chop it when it finally decided to join me. Landed in a sugar cane field where the cane is about 14' high. I couldn't even see the plane overhead. Took me about 20 min. to hike out. When I cleared the cane there were police, fire dept., ambulances everyone from the DZ etc. everywhere. Someone had told the DZ that my canopy was not open when I went in. It was even on the news that I was dead. Of course I didn't even have to wear a rig on the next jump because I was already dead.B|B|B| It was nice to know that the DZ took a proactive position to call 911 until it could be determined what happened.

Hi, Phree...

You said something which has me confused. Well, that's my usual state, so who knows if it's actually your fault...
Quote

in the process of chopping mains, the DZO walks up asks me what I'm doing and tells me I'm incompetent to swap mains.

Um, aren't you supposed to know how to do this? I mean, when I rent a rig, the main and risers are not hooked up to the harness. They come seperately. The first thing I learned (and subsequently first thing I forgot) was how to attach a main canopy to a harness....

So isn't this supposed to be something that all "A" licensees have to know? Or am I, like I said, confused and you're actually speaking about something technical...?

Believe it or not, a lot of people get parts of their A card pencil-whipped. Also, a lot of dropzones rent gear as one piece. Phree may have been hooking up the canopy to his risers (which may technically be rigger territory, I seem to recall a debate about this). It seems to me that the DZO saw Erik doing something other than his way, called him incompentent, and lost future business because of it. Erik is probably doing the guy a bigger favor than he deserves by not mentioning who it is.

If I understand, Phree was basically just swapping mains between the two rigs. Something I've seen him do a couple dozen times - pull bag out of container, cut risers away, hook risers back up to other rig, close conatainer - a pretty simple process as long as you don't twist or confuse the risers.

I think said DZO was just trying to be a prick because of Phree's home DZ. :)

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone at our DZ that will bash other area DZs, even if they do deserve it. :)

Yeah, all you guys from *the home DZ* are awesome about being nice about nearby DZ's despite the conflicts etc. Cool attitude to have.

13 points Purdue won by:2 (on Wed):0

I had a great time drinkin with friends on Fri and Sat and loved doing the "Breakfast Club" thing again. I saw many silly and scary costumes...one of which was a dz.commer running around Harry's in a bra and panties!

I maybe could've jumped today, but this awesome guy took me "dancing" instead.

That sucks you had a bad time, Eric. Not sure what kind of owner insults its customers.....hmm....
There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

Oh yeah, my numbers: 0:3:0

Took a Cessna ride to help get an S/L student's load off the ground. The JM spotted for me. Ever see the look on a pilot's face when you get to the spot, then the spotter says "Did I say west over the hanger? I meant east, sorry." I would have got out...

Then a [tony the tiger]grrrreeeat[/tony] two way that we planned on the way to altitude. I didn't catch the guy's name and he was gone by the time that I realized it, so now I have this blank in my log book. That jump also took me half way to the century mark.

Finally, a nice solo to end the day. Even got an extra thousand feet because of a go-around due to traffic below.

1 Kick-ass retirement party:0:0

Got up Sat morning to low clouds but went to Perris anyway. The cloud base held at 3k all frickin day, so not even a hop-n-pop was to be had.:(
Got to visit with Lisa though B|, and talked to Nick for awhile, as well as getting to say hi to Paul, Steve, Moley, Uli, Brian, and Blue. Nice people at Perris, and it was good to see everyone!

Then back to my sister's house where we had a ROCKIN' retirement party for my Dad! Got to visit with people I hadn't seen in 12 or 14 years.

Had a live band and drank whiskey and imported beer till the wee hours. Just got back in a few minutes ago...What a great weekend!

3 loads kicked off so a "good friend" could get on:4:0

Was to be on 3 different belly dives when I was either kicked off so "so-n-so" could jump with them cause they hadn't seen her or him in forever or told they didn't think I would be able to do it since the only spot left was a later diver slot.....f**kers I was the last diver out on a 30+ way I don't think a 10 way is that much of a stretch of the imagination. Oh well hooked up with a freefly (he flies to Perris once a month to jump cause he doesn't like the vibes here either) and ended up having some sweet dives. So I still officially hate colorado, hmmm...must be why Derek and I are blowing off the Colorado state record but willing to drive to other states to help out there.
Fly it like you stole it!

oh what a random phree encounter this weekend... and i didn't know about the comment you got about switching you main from one container to the other, but it doesn't surprise me. i got a wierd vibe from that dropzone this weekend... hard to explain, very safety conscious, but in an intimidating way.

it must have been luck that i've landed my current canopy 300 times without incident already...

at least i got out on the board a few times.B|

NOW:3:4

My weekend started Sat a little after 5:30 when I dropped the kids off at a babysitter since there was a last minute change of plans. Drove like a bat outta hell to get out to Byron to make the Sunset load. I got there in the fastest time ever for me and initialed everything under the sun on the waivers. ran down to maifest who had one last slot on the king air, I was soo stoked til I asked what the call was and it was NOW!!!....
Threw on my gear, made the decision that I didn't have time to grab the dytter and went without, ran out to the plane with Bonnie yelling after me to check my chest strap( I always do leg straps first then chest, but I did know I hadn't done it yet), Got a quick gear check at the plane and realized that I hadn't turned my cypres on but was other wise ok.
Sitting in the plane and finally getting to take a breath, I kept thinking about the "chain of events and the fact that some of my backup devices weren't with or enabled and made the decision that I would just make a simple solo sit fly, not do anything fancy, and open a little higher than usual.
Out the door and I was home again. The view was stupendous so I just kept turning around and enjoying it. Pulled at 3.5 and was doing my control checks when I saw a freebag fall past me about 100 ft away, I looked around for a white canopy but couldn't see one so I spiraled down to keep with the freebag.
This time of year, the surrounding open space are a golden brown from the dried grass. Also at Byron, there are large rolling hills that can be 2-500 feet in height to the west of the DZ. At about 200 feet above, I started to see that I was coming down on top of 2 large hills that were in a C shape. I made the decision to not try and land on the ridge line but rather follow it down the one side into the C, all the while thinking about Bill von Novak and his "can you land up hill and downhill consistently" speeches but could never remember him saying anything about how to do it :) Well, now that I have some experience, I can say that it's a LOT harder to judge flaring when the ground is moving away from you. I flared it out and found myself about 5 ft up still, let up a little but didn't have any speed left, so I plf'ed. no biggie there.
but WAIT there's MORE!! I looked to the west and in the next valley over I saw a main floating down so I kept an eye on it. but then I saw another freebag off to the right of it so there were 2 reserve rides. I hiked up the hill to get the first freebag and met the girl who had a total, it was her freebag I followed down. About 15 minutes later, someone from the DZ came to pick us up. They only knew of the one reserve ride cause the guy landed back at the DZ, so we hiked over the next vallley and found both the main AND the freebag. One of the DZO's thought it was really cool of us to stick with the eqpt and even gave us a free JT which was really cool. The gal who had the total was also thanking me all nite long... Short story long, first Downhill landing, first time following the eqpt down.
Today I only did 2 jumps, did my first SUCCESFUL hybrid, I was hangar and YES, the legs went down, and a 4 way greased safe (first) with JP, Neil, and Cornholio which went off perfectly outta the kingair.
Oh, I also left early for the first time which is kinda strange in itself....
I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. eat sushi, get smoochieTTK#1

2 (times I've now been blown off by Val... ;)): 7 : 1

Saturday I did 4 jumps, mostly flying camera for 10-way RW. "got" my first exit, even kept it in frame. :)

Sunday I did a 4-point 12 way, then went back to the dard side and did some freeflying, and a rather interesting quasi-hybrid with a real big guy who falls 150mph BTE.

I took a 139 Crossfire 2 (loaded at 1.7) for a spin on Sunday, found the riser preasure surprisingly strong, and even more finicky on opening then my Stileto. Nice flare.
