Hey, slow progress. Concepts like "clicking" and "double clicking" are starting to make sense. The difference between "desktop" "word-processor" and "web-browser" isn't so easy though...:)

You people still double click? I killed that eons ago. Everything I do is single click now. Leaves much more energy for lifting the beers to my lips.
It's your life, live it!

The most difficult thing getting through to my mother was the fact that, no matter what she did, she couldn't "break the internet". I tried explaining that even the best hackers in the world would have difficulty doing that, but then I had to explain that a hacker was, and that it wasn't just another name for a lumberjack. :S
She's got to the point now where she can turn on the PC, launch and play her Scrabble/Puzzle Bobble games and switch it off when she's finished. She's happy.

I stir feelings in others they themselves don't understand. KA'CHOW !

After 20 minutes on this very point, my mother was no closer to understanding it, but I started to develop a drinking problem.
Shit happens. And it usually happens because of physics.

Erno,

I feel your pain. That is the drawback about being the person in the family that "knows computers". I get sucked into everything. My biggest challenge is my mother-in-law and my wife's grandparents. It is out of control. :S

Sometimes I get a bit harsh. I was asked a question over the phone about a printer I've never seen. I sent the person to the manufacturer homepage, told them to search for their model, then RTFM. I was in the middle of cooking dinner, and didn't have time to mess with that crap. [:/]

Everything boils down to analogies, anyway:

Firewall=Castle wall/moat
Bandwidth=Pipe/hose
Processesor=Gerbil

Etc., etc.

I wish I could do that, but since I'm supposed to be studying IT, I'm the most proficient person to give advice to her....:S

I did prepare; I destroyed a sixpack while teaching the basics...:)

I think that I'm worse than a person that doesnt know computers. I see myself as a person that thinks he knows computers. In fact, last night, I had my laptop spread out all over the kitchen table. Surprised the thing still works. I wonder where all of those left over screws go though.

I used to have to interview guys to do workstation support. One of the questions I would ask them is if they ever disassembled a laptop. If they said, "yes", I would ask them how many screws they had left over. If they said. "none", I knew they were lying. ;)

When you are working on hardware problems at work, isn't the goal to gradually accumulate enough spare parts to build yourself a complete system for your house? ;)

I'm trying to teach my mother the mysteries of Internet and Word processing. :)

It's more difficult than I anticipated.

Best thing I ever did was install PC Anywhere on the parent's pc. Most of the time anything comes up, I call them back on the cell with my unlimited free long distance and remote to their pc so I can walk them through the process. LD at home is free too for 90 minutes so plenty of time to make the lesson work and it's caused less frustration and headaches.

I've switched from using PCanywhere to VNC - its fast, its simple and its FREE. I use Terminal Services to connect to work and then VNC from there.

BTW Erno one thing you should know, if you ever move to another country for an extended period and have taught your mom about email, expect daily emails about EVERYTHING... :S (and when you don't reply to every email...:()
