Getting a new rig..

I got the freefly pud handled pullout and love it.

I thought you had the freefly pud-handled throwout? Or am I confused?

Whoops, your right. I pull my BOC pilot chute out of the cordura pocket with the pud handle attached to it that tucks under the flap, so no bridle is exposed at all.:$

o.k. guys.. It's new container time..

Rob,
Most everything you can buy nowadays is perfectly suitable to any kind of skydiving you might want to get into. Still, some have problems in the smaller sizes and some have problems in the larger sizes. I have two tiny little javs (Odyssey RS and 1998 XRS)that are bulletproof, but the larger ones we use at the school have main flaps that won't stay shut. You will find that problem in other rigs also, commonly on the tuck flaps.

For the money, Infinities and Wings containers cannot be beat. Both are outstanding rigs in the size you need and can be had at least $500 less than other more "popular" rigs like Odysseys and Mirages. I also really like Microns, so in the end it all comes down to what feels best on your back.

Try on every rig you can get your hands on and see which one fits best, then buy. Be advised that there are plenty of gear vendors out there and they all want your business. Some get better deals on certain equipment than others, so shop around before you plunk down your hard-earned cash.

Seconded. I haven't jumped a lot of containers (5 total), but of those I've jumped I liked the Infinity and Wings best. I was looking at a Wings with a base price of $850 + options, but ordered an Infinity from Lisa (with the same options) for $120 more, because the Infinity is every bit as comfortable as the Wings and I like the pin protection better.

Heheh, no worries, I just wanted to be sure because that's what I want to order. One quick question, though...what happens if you want to hook someone else's main up to your rig and his/her PC has a hackey handle? Is the BOC shaped differently, or is the handle the only difference?

Do people actually jump anything except Mirage? I didn't even know they made other containers!

As much as I love my Mirage G3 UNISYN, I won't shell out that much cash when I can get the same options, protection, and fit out of a Wings for a lot less jump-tickets.

the BOC is the same. The pud handle is just secured under the flap adjacent to the pocket. If the pilot chute has a hackey it will just bobble around the mouth of the pocket like it would on any other rig.

OK, sweet. I actually had the thought of ordering a container/reserve now, and then demoing canopies for a bit before committing to one. Is this a sensible approach?

Depends. If you're pretty sure of the size main you'll be getting and are planning to demo to narrow down your brand/type/model choices, buying your container and reserve now is a good idea. If you're not sure what size main you'll want, it may be better to wait until you know for sure what size you're getting.

Well, I'm going to try a 170 next time out, and if I'm happy with it, that will be the size for me. Someone suggested to me to get the container sized for the next size down, so that I'll get more use out of the container. Is this reasonable or not? I've decided on the container, and options, so I'm really itching to order. :)

Again, depends. Personally, I think doing that is nuts, especially for someone who is just learning to pack. Stuffing 170 sq.ft. of zp into a space designed to hold 150 sq.ft. of zp would be an exercise in frustration if you aren't already good at packing zp.

Using packers? Trust me, they won't like it any more than you would, and you may find that some packers will refuse to pack for you at all.

My rig was built for a 170 zp; that's what I have in there and it's really tight. There are a few packers at Perris who won't pack for me at all after packing it a few times. If I'd sized my container for a 150 and then put my 170 in it, I doubt any of them would be willing to pack for me.

Get a container sized for the main you'll be jumping... you can easily and safely go down one size (and in most rigs two sizes) using the same container.

Depends on how much money you want to expend
here will be my list (from first choice to last) if I had the money:

1 Voodoo (its the best looking container and made by a very good rigger)
2 mirage G# (looks schweet!)
3 Infinity (very cheap, looks small, and is freefly ready from the store) I think this one is going to be my next rig cause am broke.
4 Javelin (looks nice)
5 Parachute du france (last of my list cause the store is in france but its a very good looking container and very small)

Nathan,

You try a stunt like that again and I'll lock your account and ban your username. I asked Roy not to advertise in the forums and you actually respond to the post that I changed (so you did see it) by simply posting it again. I even linked the rules again from my post! PM rhino if you want to let him know about a good deal.

I really don't have time to sit around and police these forums for people who simply try to make work for me by blatantly breaking the rules. Not cool.
