billvon 3,076 #3 September 20, 2002 Another series of books in the same vein is "Kushiel's chosen" and "Kushiel's dart" by J. Carey. The first one, at least, is pretty good.
AndyMan 7 #4 September 20, 2002 Yeah, one of the most interesting books I read this summer, for sure. It gave me a whole new take on both Anne Rice, and Sleeping Beauty. Bills right, Kusheils Dart and Kusheils Chosen are also good similarly themed books. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
mujie96 0 #5 September 20, 2002 Serious S&M and damn near porn. My kind of books... Jess Just keep swimming...just keep swimming....
billvon 3,076 #6 September 20, 2002 >Serious S&M and damn near porn. My kind of books... "Damn near porn?" I think it masquerades as non-porn primarily because it has a plot. Some others: "Leash" by Jane DeLynn. A lot more explicit, disappointing cliche ending. "Did you say chicks?" by Esther Fresner. Collections of short stories that are between feminist and soft BDSM. "Meeting the master" by Elissa Wald. More short stories, some quite good. John Norman's got a series of books about that very topic, but it's almost impossible to get through his "women-are-naturally-inferior" sermons. AndyMan 7 #8 September 20, 2002 Quotedamn near porn ??? It IS porn, and that's one of the things that makes it so interesting, the dichotomy between porn and capital "L" literature. There's an excerpt from the second Beauty book I was tempted to post, because it is more pornographic then a typical "letter" to penthouse. I decided against it, it's over the top even for here, I think. One of the things that makes part of this genre so interesting is that for the most part porn is poorly written, when it's a movie it's invariably poorly acted and poorly directed. When you take the genre and have it written by a skilled mainstream author it gives it credence, not only making it respectable to admit reading, but elevates the genre to something that is WORTH reading. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. billvon 3,076 #13 September 20, 2002 >I AM female, ya know, and therefore have this strange affinity for > books with a plot. Movies of this variety on the other hand.... Movies - no different. There are any number of really bad BDSM movies, but you can still find ones that are actually pretty good: Story of O. This is sort of the standard by which other movies of this type are judged. Perils of Gwendoline. A pretty average action/adventure movie until just about halfway, when things get very interesting. The Cell. Heavy BDSM subtheme. Love and human remains. Subplot is Mia Kirshner as a dominatrix.

Luna 0 #15 September 20, 2002 Anne Rice also wrote a book called Exit to Eden which is along the same lines. I read it but never got to the Beauty books. They made a movie out of this book in 1994, which tried to make it into a comedy. I was so lame! But the book is really good! If you like the beauty books, pick this one up for sure! happythoughts 0 #17 September 20, 2002 "I was always wondering what it takes to direct a porn movie" At the end of cartoons, the credits always list a director. That would be a cool job.
