First Jump

Recommended Posts

I made my first jump today (tandem) at Redcliffe here in Australia / Queensland. It was a totaly awesome experiance, that has left me in a natural high all day, I can't imagine how i'm going to get to sleep later.
I've been trying to put the experiance into words so i can tell the guys at work about it, and I can't do it, there are no words in the english language that can describe the sensations and emotions that I felt during the whole event. The moment that I left the airplane with the tandem master, I felt the most intense and mind numbing fear of my life, the feeling in the pit of my stomach as we fell was gut wrenching. The roar of sound in my ears as we acelerated added a total feeling of speed. And once the tandem master had us in a level fall, I found that I could not breath easily because of the rush of wind, but I just focused on pushing air out and pulling it in. We fell for about 40 seconds or so, with the city and beach coming up at us real fast. I though the deceleration from the opening of the chute would be a lot worse than it actualy was. And for the next 6 minutes the tandem master let me make a few turns and stuff.
Once he had us on the beach I had this totaly awesome high happening and could not sit still for a moment !
I am certain that this is a sport that i am going to dive into ( sorry about the choice of words ) with all my determination.
To anyone out there who has not done this, DO IT !!! you only live once, I can't imagine who I was yesterday, before my jump, all i know now is that I am totaly adicted and am signing up for an AFF course to get my licence to jump solo.
Anyway sorry to ramble on about this, but I felt i had to share my experiance with you all :)
Steve:)

Congrats!!! ;) The things you feel about the jump is pretty much common to everyone else who has jumped. If you haven't done it, you'll never understand it! Have you thought about AFF??
Believe me, it just keeps gettin' better. And once you get about 25-50 jumps under your belt, you develop a completly new awarness of flying your body
AND that keeps gettin' better and better and better...
It's the greatest sport in the world and I and every other jumper welcome you aboard!!!

Congrats and welcome to the club. ;)

I remember my first jump (a tandem back in July of this year) was loud, windy and intense. But it was also way too cool not to try again. So I enrolled in an AFF course and three weeks ago I became a licensed skydiver. Also, on one of my last jumps (I haven't jumped in a few weeks thanks to a minor hockey injury), I jumped without a helmet for the first time since my tandem jump (I had lent mine to a student who forgot his) and the experience wasn't nearly as intense as it was during my tandem. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that the more you jump, the more acclaimated you'll become to the whole experience and the easier you'll be able to process the whole thing.

Good luck in any future jumps you may make. Despite my sore toe, I'm heading off to the DZ tomorrow to jump for the first time in three weeks. Wish me luck. :$

Totally Cool...You DA MAN, Steve!!!
Hey, I'm a newbie too. I did four tandems before I got myself psyched up enough to go into a Freefall program. AFP, it's like AFF but with one JM.
So far I've got in 7 jumps, 3 of them in AFP. Yesterday I did my first skydive without the JM holding on to me the whole time...AND the adreniline/endrophine BUZZ really is still pretty intense, lasting for hours with me.
Skydiving is awesome, isn't it? Welcome to "the tribe" of sky jumpers!!!:)

It's always good to hear about someone's first jump. It helps all those 'old hands' relive their first jump.
The only way I could describe the experience to wuffos is that it's one of those quintessential experiences that you have in life that cannot bve compared to anything else you do, or anything else that will happen to you. It's easier to talk about it to fellow skydivers because we've all been there and we all have a common frame of reference.
Welcome on board, and jump over the side as soon & as often as you can.

I stir feelings in others they themselves don't understand. KA'CHOW !

Sounds like your Tandem Master set the hook deep!!

They are good at doing that! Congratulations. The feelings and emotions are unexplainable to anyone that hasn't done a skydive. I have completely given up trying to explain to my family 'what it is all about'. One family family member even said to me, "good job, well done"!!!!! What was that? I tried to explain it wasn't a job:S, but a passion! They will never understand:(. I thank everyone on this forum for being here and listening to our first jump stories, it is so important to be able to talk about this experience with people that understand:)
