SAMPLEKSample 0 #26 September 16, 2002 I didnt have my rig in my loving arms until 120 jumps...got out the plastic and had plenty of time to know just what I wanted...God knows I jumped everything/anything in any size that i could get my hands on...got new, which can be foolish, but regardless...it is the greatest non-living thing in my life! I had plenty of time to really know what I would be flying for a long time, etc...and nothing feels better than good, new gear!!! ...even though I had to sell my car and max out my credit cards...noone can take away my baby...my wings!!! Kirils 1 #27 September 16, 2002 14 jumps and I bought a 170 Heatwave and a cheapo dolphin container. At 50 jumps I dropped to a Heatwave 150 in a Mirage. Before 100 jumps I had jumped a 150 Stiletto and 110 sabre. (I weighted 190 out the door then) Since then, too many different canopies to count. I'm stuck on my Xaos 108 in a G3 and Diablo 150 now. Canopies are like cars, some fit you well, others don't. Demo, Demo and find what you like."Slow down! You are too young to be moving that fast!" scottbre 0 #28 September 16, 2002 QuoteI started jumping my very own stuff on skydive #13. Yep, me too. "Your mother's full of stupidjuice!" My Art Project
meatmissile 0 #29 September 16, 2002 After about 30 jumps I bought my first system (second-hand). Upgraded to new stuff at about 70 jumps and bought my elliptical canopy at around 100 jumps. PS: Your typing error reads really funny in local South African slang. meatmissile 0 #31 September 16, 2002 See? You get it - because you're also from lekker old SA! Scratch would probably also get it, although that gentleman has such a refined sense of humor, not to mention taste, that he wouldn't find it funny.... Or maybe he won't get it... -- ZZZzzzz.... SatchFan 0 #32 September 16, 2002 I started as soon as I got my A. Which was about 20 jumps. The sooner, the better because the jumps get a lot cheaper using your own gear.
Jessica 0 #33 September 16, 2002 QuoteThe sooner, the better because the jumps get a lot cheaper using your own gear. The downside to that is you're buying gear before you really know what you're doing. I never would have bought the main I did (well-used PD 170) if I'd been educated at all about canopies. I just knew it was around the right size. I did end up with a nice container that I like and that fits like a dream. But that was pure luck.Skydiving is for cool people only
indyz 1 #34 September 16, 2002 QuoteThe sooner, the better because the jumps get a lot cheaper using your own gear. That's a damn lie and you know it! You think, oh a rig, then jumps are only $18 (or whatever). Then it's an RW suit. Then a cooler helmet. Then maybe a fullface for winter. Then a freefly suit. How about an audible. That beer debt stacks up really quick, too. License fees, boogie registrations, special planes. Since late May I've spent almost 90% of my earnings on skydiving related stuff. That's probably twice what I spent while renting gear. Of course I don't have any living expenses to speak of, what with being in college and all. SatchFan 0 #35 September 16, 2002 Yeah, you're right....the list never ends but once you get a good set of gear you do get to spend a lot more money on jumps which equals more learning and more fun.
AndyMan 7 #36 September 16, 2002 Quote The sooner, the better because the jumps get a lot cheaper using your own gear I disagree. Young jumpers frequently move rapidly from HUGE canopies (.6 wingloading) on their first jump to probably 1.1 or even 1.2 by the time they have 50 jumps. If they buy too early they'll either be "locking in" at this low wingloading, or buying a canopy they're not ready for. I didn't get mine until I had 40 jumps, at which point I bought at 1.2 I did start buying some gear while still a student. Altimeter, goggles and a helmet are all good choices that will cost a lot, and you'll keep forever. _Am _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. mujie96 0 #39 September 17, 2002 I have 25 jumps. I started looking for gear as soon as I finished AFF and I now have or have ordered all of my rig. Only thing missing is my container which I bought new, DOH! Jess Just keep swimming...just keep swimming....
hohonukai 0 #40 September 17, 2002 Goggles and altimeter were first. I started buying my equipment after 100 jumps. Got tired of feeling like I would fall out of the rental gear (which I wouldn't, of course) and couldn't freefly with it either.
