Magistr8 0 #26 September 11, 2002 I went out and took the WRX out for a test drive today and it was hot. Really responsive, great power distribution all across the board, all around great. miked10270 0 #27 September 11, 2002 Hi there, watch the VR-6. Over here (UK) they have a reputation for eating front tyres and front suspension bushes if you use the power. For performance and reliability I'd say go for the Subaru. The Japanese market does a WRX 280 and there's a $hitload of tuning stuff for it (500bhp is easily within reach if engine life & maintenance isn't mush of a priority). This is the homologation (street) version of the works rally car and is probably unbeatable on twisty dirt roads. If you're REALLY into off-road, then can you get the Landrover Defender in your area? OK, it's a bit of a truck, slow & noisy, but once you're off road it's almost unstoppable. Mike D10270. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. ADRNALN 0 #28 September 11, 2002 Hey Mike Have you heard of the same issues with the 1.8T? I am at the crossroads of keeping it or going back to Jeeps(Just Empty Every Pocket).
spinmaster 0 #29 September 11, 2002 I have a write-in vote: Pontiac GrandPrix GTP. It's stock with a 3.8L V-6 with a supercharger. It only makes 240HP which isn't great but it's obviously de-tuned at that rating. Add about $1500 in minor mods and you'll get close to 300HP without sacrificing motor life. Another $1500 and mods and you get close to 350hp on car that’s as smooth as anything on the highway. It'll get you to the DZ in a hurry if you drive any real distance to get there. Invest in tires and suspension mods and it'll run with just about anything then. It's a sleeper too. No one thinks this car is dangerous...but it is. jfields 0 #31 September 11, 2002 Good article on car buying and tricks the dealers try to use. Learn about the process itself, and save on whatever car you end up buying. http://www.fool.com/community/pod/2002/020911.htm?ref=foolwatch
coho21 0 #32 September 11, 2002 Go with the WRX. They have pretty good ground clearance. (not as much as aggiedave's truck but enough to battle any snow demons you might encounter on the way to the hill) and the boxer engine that they run is sweet. It's totally reliable and has a super long life span. Plus, how can you beat a reasonably priced production car that blows the tires off of some of the higher priced sports cars out there. nicknitro71 0 #33 September 11, 2002 It's funny. When I was shopping for a new car I narrowed down to two: the WRX and my truck (Dakota Quad cab 4X4). I went for the truck. Now my girlfriend is shopping for one and I'm pushing for the WRX Memento Audere Semper
dunesurfer 0 #34 September 11, 2002 The 350 Z is nice. We can't keep them on the lot as they sell fast, usually the first day they are off the transport.
