Viking 0 #1 August 30, 2002 I just got done cleaning the entire bathroom after my gandmother had an unplanned bowl movement i geuss you could call it. For some odd reason doing this kinda thing doesn't bother me in the least. I wonder if retirment homes need a muk raker(sp) ALso don't ya hate it how the smell of bleach cleaner stays in your nose after you spray down an entire room with it The things we do for the people we love. skydiverbrian 0 #2 August 30, 2002 I play primary caregiver to the general population. Just call 911 whenever your feet hurt from not wearing shoes all day I'll be there. (No kidding - this really happened) I think it's great that you are taking care of your g-ma. Don't put her in a home. They're horrible miserable places. Even the best ones let people rot away and then don't even notice they've been dead for 2 days. (No kidding - this happened, too) Keep her at home where she'll be happy and well-cared-for all the way to the end. And yeah, I was primary caregive along with my wife to my twins when they were babies. Often times we leave the world like we came into it, helpless like that. You're gonna make a great father. When gramps had his stroke they put him in a Physical Rehab ward. My Mom and I did 24 hour shifts. The Nurses and RNs couldn't beleive we were doing that, they even tried to get us to leave by saying we couldn't sleep on the other empty bed in his room. So we just brought in a camping cot and a sleeping bag. Any time one of my elders (and there have been many) has spent any time in the hospital or rehab, and we've done the 24 hour thing, the staff has always been very welcoming to us. The rehab place my Uncle was at even showed us where the staff lounge was so we wouldn't have to go to the cafateria for coffee and such. A friend of mine got out of the Air Force after being a Forward Air Controller for about 9 years. Several of those spent with 2/75th Rangers. He took a deal where the Air Force paid 100% of his college and paid him to go to school. He's now a Leutenant and making some pretty decent money. Not to mention he retires in like 8 years. I know I saw an add not long ago in a skydiving mag recruiting people for the Phoenix area. They were paying $38-45 per hour to start. Plus vacation and benefits. Not too shabby. I just can't stand doing medical stuff. I'll do what I have to, to save someone's life but not as a living. Good on you for being their for your grandparents. skymut 0 #18 August 30, 2002 Just wanted to give you props viking, for taking care of your grandma, that is most cool. I lived with my (90+ y.o.) grandma for ~6 years while in college and after. Best years of my life. She is still alive (and sharp as a tack) and celebrated her 95th birthday. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to get to know her, most people take it for granted.
