Whats the diff. between jet prop and turbine prop engines?

Recommended Posts

Jet prop = turboprop = turbine prop.

You may hear someone describe a 182 as a turbo 182. That means its' piston engine is turbo charged. But it is not a jet engine.

A turboprop is a turbine engine (rotary) hooked through a reduction gearbox to a propellor. "Jet prop" is a misnomer since it does not get its' thrust from jet exhaust but rather the rotation of the propellor.

Hope that helps.

Turbine=Jet. It is a propeller powered by a jet engine. Apparently more reliable as a jet turbine has much less moving parts than a Piston engine i.e. less reasons for things to go wrong.
Also, a Turboprop (as they often are called) has more power, hence brings you to altitude faster (long live the Otter)

Diverdriver summed it up nicely.

Here's way more than you're looking for:

Oh! and I found this program once that models turbine performance. I thought this was cool!

Chris there is still some thrust out of the back of them bad boys.....you know that.....

[total sarcasm] Some people's children....I tell yah....."Yes, your Honor. There is a LITTLE exhaust thrust on SOME turboprop aircraft." It's called ESHP "Equivelant Shaft Horse Power". And yes, Mr. Poopy Pants, rain on my parade (post) the Twin Otter has about 70-80 pounds of exhaust thrust. [/sarcasm]

Dork. :P

That is a thought - equip a motorbike with a mini jet engine and make it tow a large water tank with sharks with little laser beams attached to their heads. Buuhahahahaha...!

At a price of $185,000 for the Y2K bike my sharks with little laser beams atached to their heads will just cost spare change. How many DeHavilland Twin Otters in decent condition can u get for that cash - 3 or 4 I assume.

Fly em like they're stolen... because they probably are

Night jumps anyone.....of course I'll need you to carry this back pack in this harness. Don't open it! Just give it to the nice landing area attendant. Don't worry about the 50 Ft jump run either. I'll pop up to 2000Ft just before I give the green light. B|

Yeah, but you don't get to log any of the flight time. :)
Clay - that was hilarious :D

Hehe, yeah, that would be great for the examiner to see in my logbook when I go for my ATP checkride.. ;)

I'm afraid to comment on Clay's post after a nightmare I had last night, but I felt it was amusing. B|
