Skymonkey13 0 #1 August 27, 2002 Can someone tell me the difference between jet prop and turbine prop engines? Thanx
diverdriver 5 #2 August 27, 2002 Jet prop = turboprop = turbine prop. You may hear someone describe a 182 as a turbo 182. That means its' piston engine is turbo charged. But it is not a jet engine. A turboprop is a turbine engine (rotary) hooked through a reduction gearbox to a propellor. "Jet prop" is a misnomer since it does not get its' thrust from jet exhaust but rather the rotation of the propellor. Hope that helps.Chris Schindler www.diverdriver.com ATP/D-19012 FB #4125
jraf 0 #3 August 27, 2002 Turbine=Jet. It is a propeller powered by a jet engine. Apparently more reliable as a jet turbine has much less moving parts than a Piston engine i.e. less reasons for things to go wrong. Also, a Turboprop (as they often are called) has more power, hence brings you to altitude faster (long live the Otter)jraf Me Jungleman! Me have large Babalui. Jayboz 0 #4 August 27, 2002 Diverdriver summed it up nicely. Here's way more than you're looking for: http://www.mas.ncl.ac.uk/~sbrooks/book/nish.mit.edu/2006/Textbook/Nodes/chap05/node12.html#SECTION00241200000000000000 and http://filebox.vt.edu/eng/mech/scott/gasturbine.html Oh! and I found this program once that models turbine performance. I thought this was cool! http://www.gasturb.de/GasTurbMainPage/gasturbmainpage.html

diverdriver 5 #7 August 27, 2002 QuoteChris there is still some thrust out of the back of them bad boys.....you know that..... [total sarcasm] Some people's children....I tell yah....."Yes, your Honor. There is a LITTLE exhaust thrust on SOME turboprop aircraft." It's called ESHP "Equivelant Shaft Horse Power". And yes, Mr. Poopy Pants, rain on my parade (post) the Twin Otter has about 70-80 pounds of exhaust thrust. [/sarcasm] Dork. Chris

Just give it to the nice landing area attendant. Don't worry about the 50 Ft jump run either. I'll pop up to 2000Ft just before I give the green light.
