quade 4 #2 August 17, 2002 There are a couple of people here that might know a bit about it, but you might also want to try http://www.baselogic.com/.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
fasterfaller 0 #3 August 17, 2002 They are not to friendly at Lake Powell towards base jumpers . That is a good place to get you in a legal mess . There are other good spots in arizona where you wont have trouble .
TomAiello 26 #4 August 17, 2002 I sent you an email. If you're dead set on trying it, and the contact I provided is unhelpful, drop me an email.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
TomAiello 26 #5 August 17, 2002 I was just looking at your full profile. I was going to email you, but I thought I'd post here for anyone else who might be considering something like this. Your profile shows 90 skydives. I'm not sure what your BASE experience is. Are you one of the guys I jumped with in early May? If so, I'm sure that W will give you any necessary lecture on this subject, but... I am concerned because 90 skydives is probably insufficient preparation for the slider down cliffs in the National Recreation Area (i.e. high bust area) in question. The distance to rescue, high bust consequences, and low altitude of the solid objects all point to this being a bad idea. If you are planning on going out there without more experienced BASE jumpers, I'd definitely reconsider (heck, I'd reconsider anyway). Like I said, feel free to email me if you're looking for more info, or if you just want to talk over the trip. I'm sure your local crew can give you some help too.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
miked10270 0 #6 August 17, 2002 Hi David, Like Tom I looked at your profile. Do they still do ballon jumps at Eloy & Coolige? Have you done any? How is your tracking? How is your sub-terminal control? Short version, can you leave a balloon and track like feck in your chosen direction under control!? Can I suggest a few balloon jumps? Then can I suggest getting a course with one of the BASE rig manufacturers? I'm pretty sure that at least one such course is run in California. Personally I went into BASE the stupid way and looking back I bloody near killed myself. Despite a reasonable level of experience and currency I was too unaware (stupid) to realise at the time how close I came to becoming "The Thin Red Smear". In effect I didn't end up with the "Brown Trousers", but everyone who saw me did!! Personally, as far as BASE goes, MY intentions are to get some qualified coaching before trying it again. Hope this helps, Mike D10270. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Prenait la pisse hors du FrançaisCanadiens méridionaux puisqu'avant lui à la mode. TomAiello 26 #7 August 17, 2002 QuoteI'm pretty sure that at least one such course is run in California. To my knowledge, all the US BASE manufacturers have moved their courses to our legal 486' span. I don't think anyone is still holding their course in California.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
fasterfaller 0 #8 August 17, 2002 We don't need any more bad press about this area . I would like to one day see legal jumps at powell but if we keep on pissing them off it will never happen . The last I heard it still was not legal to jump there . It is also a VERY bad idea to post when you are going to be jumping in an area you should not be jumping in . TomAiello 26 #9 August 17, 2002 The legal situation in National Parks (like Lake Powell) is actually getting worse, rather than better. The NPS recently added language to the CFR stating that "BASE" or "Fixed Object Parachuting" was a specifically prohibited activity. Like you, I'd love to see Lake Powell, Yosemite, and all those places in NPS land allow jumping again. But it's going to be a long battle to get there. I guess that's why I spend so much time on BLM land. The NPS is (in my opinion) a powerful argument for voting Republican (as the Republicans keep trying to trim land off the Parks and give them to the BLM, which allows jumping, while the Democrats [and the Sierra Club, and other conservation groups] are forever trying to "Parkize" BLM lands).-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
skycat 0 #10 August 17, 2002 QuoteI guess that's why I spend so much time on BLM land. This isn't base related but we prefer hiking/backpacking on BLM and national forest land rather than in national parks. If I wanted to hike with 50 screaming/whiney kids i would go to the mall. Plus our doggie gets to join us rather than sit at home torturing the cat. I'll take the not so perfect path, I'll climb over a tree or two that has fallen in the path in a heart beat over the nice marked paths with little signs that tell you how much farther to the lake (or whatever) in the Parks. Just to be able to actually see some wildlife and enjoy nature rather than spending the whole time navigating around strollers.Fly it like you stole it! freeflir29 0 #11 August 17, 2002 No doubt Skycat!! I have a house in Montana. It's in the largest county (Land area) in the state but it's only 15% privately owned. I think most of it is NFS, BLM, some state, etc. The cool part is.....none of it is NPS. You can drive for hours and never see pavement. The only pain is the amount of closed roads in the fall. I guess it's good. It keeps all the "Road hunters" away from the good spots. I went to Yellowstone once. It was neat to see the hot springs and geysers but in general I didn't like it much. I'll take unspoiled forest any day.
seedy 0 #12 August 17, 2002 I go to Yellowstone every chance I can get. Love that place. But....you have to get at least 1/4 mile away from the roads to get away from the screaming kids and rude tourists. After that, it is nice, quiet, and loaded with wildlife. I had one lady tell me she hadn't seen any wildlife in two days in the park. There was a cow elk laying behind a bush not 15-feet from her. I intend to live forever -- so far, so good. freeflir29 0 #13 August 17, 2002 QuoteBut....you have to get at least 1/4 mile away from the roads to get away from the screaming kids and rude tourists True....I didn't really have the time to do that. We just hit the highlights over the 2 days we had to spend there. I'd still rather be in my backyard in Montana. We have all the Elk, deer, bears, mountain lions, birds, beavers, wolves, trout, and whatever other wildlife you can think of. Plus.....I don't get charged to get in... seedy 0 #14 August 17, 2002 My big sis lived in Belgrade, Bozeman, and Laurel for years. We would go visit her every other year. I spent six months working in Havre. I have driven all over Montana. I tried to move up there in '91, but couldn't find work at that time. I do like Montana also. My sis now lives in Cody, WY, so won't be getting into Montana as much. I intend to live forever -- so far, so good.
freeflir29 0 #15 August 17, 2002 Quotebut couldn't find work at that time Gee...there's a suprise. That's why I don't live at there year round. Just try to visit as often as I can. My house is near Superior which is about an hour West of Missoula. Damn nice area but there is just about NOTHING to do for a living out there. I do know a couple spots that might be good for a BASE jump though. Unfortunately, most of them are WAAAY back in the hills. Not exactly where you want to be if you get hurt.
