kevin922 0 #1 August 10, 2002 Well for those of you who have kept up with my last few posts you know that I have been jobless for the last few months due to the fine former CEO / CFO, etc.. of my company, WorldCom. At any rate, I've been applying non stop to companies going to job fairs and everything else, with no luck of even one interview. Well, two weeks ago I got my first interview with a well established computer security company, they called me in for a second interview the following week (this past week) and said that they would get back to me early next week as to a decision. I have a real good feeling I'll get an offer, they went over benifits and everything. We had formal sitdown interviews with numerous people in the company, went over the job position in detail, etc... Well I guess when it rains it pours, because I had a callback from another company - one that I met at a jobfair. This company is significantly smaller -- only about 100 employees total, only about 15 in my area. They've been around a while, but they are pretty small. The benifits aren't as great and I really didn't get a warm fuzzy about the company. My interview consisted of a phone convo where I went over my resume with someone in another state and then a sit down lunch at a resturant where we talked about the company and what they are doing. They didn't even have me fill out an application, didn't ask for previous salary history or anything -- they already have an offer letter in the mail to me -- over 2X my previous salary. So the question is this --- how do I decide what to take?? I really like the first company, haven't had an offer but like I said, I am pretty sure I will get one. I am next to positive it will be lower than the 2nd company's offer because I gave the 2nd company a higher salary range. The first company seemed more professional, and a more defined job position for me.. the second company seems like they are just trying to hire talent, they went over a lot of stuff I could "fit into" but never really said exactly what I would be doing if I were hired. What do you guys think?? I know money isn't everything.. the first company salary range was about a 10K difference. So if company 1 gave me the high end and company 2 gave me the low end then they would be about equal.
blondeflyer7 0 #2 August 10, 2002 Go with your gut feeling if you don't feel like you'll be happy in the second job really look at your pro's and con's and see how you feel! This is kinda your call and how you feel, money isn't everything happiness is! remember that, when you make your decision.
narcimund 0 #3 August 10, 2002 Wow. Everything you listed as undesirable about the second company sounds great to me. "Never really said exactly what I would be doing" (i.e., find what I can contribute over time instead of in a one-day interview), "significantly smaller" (i.e., less beaurocracy), "benefits aren't as great" (i.e., let me make my own decisions with the extra money), "they are just trying to hire talent" (i.e., people with value contribute their skills both strategically and tactically). Just goes to show that what you hate, I love. So given all this, why would you ask for advice? How on earth could anyone on a bulletin board know your best choice? loopysteph 0 #4 August 10, 2002 WHO told you money isn't everything???!!! Listen dude, the more you can get the better, go for more money. "Its all about not working"! Why do you even work in the first place? Is it because you truely enjoy working? NO WAY! you work so you can enjoy the time that you are not working. So you can take chix out...so you can pay bills...so you can SKYDIVE! Trust me on this one, you can thank me later

blondeflyer7 0 #6 August 10, 2002 All I was saying is that happiness is the key to life and for him to go with his gut instincts. Sure you have to have money to live and go out and especially Skydive but to be miserable doing it. I have found that no job is perfect but first instincts needs to be considered. Maybe you'll love the job who knows. Again this would definitely be your call. There's always going to be different views on this! I trust you'll make the right decision
loopysteph 0 #7 August 10, 2002 You would be surprised what a lot of people would put up with for 8 leeiiiittle hours of work, for twice the pay. I would eat dog shit sandwiches all day for twice my pay! -AND I DON'T EVEN LIKE BREAD!

FliegendeWolf 0 #9 August 10, 2002 Can't you use the larger offer from the second company as leverage to get more from the first?A One that Isn't Cold is Scarcely a One at All
Pammi 0 #10 August 10, 2002 What should you do? Be thankful and pick one. There are many who would be grateful for ANY job offer, besides two in this economy. Good luck whatever you choose.
