Enrique 0 #1 July 24, 2002 Does anyone have an idea why therre is such a high divorce rate among skydivers? It seems to me that 99% of the skydivers I know have been divorced at least once. The remaining 1% has not yet realized they are married.

skymut 0 #5 July 24, 2002 Marriage is difficult, even if you don't have any 'other passions' in your life. I was skydiving before I got married (been married 3 + years), and I married a complete whuffo. Our first year of marriage was rough, especially when it came to skydiving. I had to learn to understand my wife's concerns and fears, and guess what...I had to meet her in the middle (that's part of marriage, right?). I have found that the more I work at understanding her and her needs, the more she does the same for me. I go skydiving now a LOT more now than I did that first year I was married, that I fought with her about letting me go. I don't go quite as often as I like, but I go more than I need ($$$). But, I love my wife, and it's worth it. Doesn't really answer your question, but I think there is some insight. Matt A well-informed person is somebody who has the same views and opinions as yours. Enrique 0 #6 July 24, 2002 Quote...I had to meet her in the middle *** Ditto. I am not married, but my girlfriend is a complete whuffo, too, and I too had to meet her in the middle. In addition, she is not used to the kind of fun you gringos have (i.e., mooning the pilot during a beautiful sunset fly-by; or getting extra-altitude by merely flashing the pilot). Mexicans are supposed to be a little bit more "conservative" (whatever that means). But I guess you are on the right track. Cielos azules.
 skybytch 273 #7 July 24, 2002 There's an old saying... I forget exactly how it goes, but it's something along the lines of "Skydiving ruins marriages, marriage ruins skydivers." I don't know why, but I've seen it happen. Repeatedly. A jumper marries a whuffo and before long the gear is up for sale. A married person starts jumping without their spouse and before long the divorce is in process (or the gear is up for sale). Doesn't seem to matter if the jumper is male or female either. It takes a very strong relationship to stick together when one person is addicted to freefall and the other can't understand why all that money and time is spent at the dz. Considering that most jumpers are big on instant gratification and are at least somewhat selfish... it doesn't surprise me at all. Which is why I don't even want to date a whuffo, much less marry one.
 jncoughlin 0 #8 July 24, 2002 I'm a newbie, just off AFF and I turned 50 last year. My wife thought skydiving was merely a midlife crisis. Q; Suppose you forget to pull the thingie? a: (I decide not to delve into the topic of altitude awareness). We have a computer that opens it for us. Q: Suppose both parachites fail? A: (I decide not to admit that it's not your day that day). I explian the statistics and compare those to the more mundane risks that she experiences every day such as driving or commercial flying.
