reserve repack update

Recommended Posts

The BOD apparently has directed HQ to pursue the extension of the reserve
repack cycle from 120 days to 180 days. The BOD suggested that you should
work with PIA on this matter.

There was discussion of this issue in a committee meeting where you were not
present. Mike Perry, Eastern Regional Director, volunteered to be the focal
point to collect whatever data is out there, whether from PIA or any other
source, to present a USPA proposal to the FAA for the repack extension. It was
thought that we would need to present some drop test data to substantiate any
claims that we make that the reserve would function normally and within the TSO
limitations after being packed for 6 months.

I did volunteer, at no charge, my aircraft and DZ for any necessary drop tests
to collect the necessary data.

I have heard that $40,000 was set aside for the study.

Save the money... We've had a six-month repack-cycle in use in Finland for over a year now, and the reserves work just the same as ever. The only difference is that the packjobs need to be a bit tighter now, as the reserves have more time to settle in in the container, meaning that the closing loops of some of the reserves near the end of the repack cycle seem a bit loose.

Hi ya Bill,

40K wasn't set aside.
That was the amount mentioned by MOM on the wreck.
He beleives with that amount and a seat on the BOD he can get the repack interval extended.

I wish him luck on both endevors.

(GL on the election buddy )

how long has Canada been 6 months, and others if you can post reserve repack cycles and how long they have been that way out side of the usa? Hard data, anything you can do to help out.

also for the stateside jumpers, you might e mail Mike Perry: mprigging@aol.com thanking him for being the focal point to collect whatever data is out there, whether from PIA or any other source. Maybe even asking what we can do to help.

It has been suggested that out of date reserves could be used in the study. I am sure some of you have a air worthy rig that the reserve needs aired out. If you all want to come up to speed with the rest of the world let's do something about it and help.

while ststioned in germany i jumped at a local german "falschirm sport club" or paracute club and the cycle was 180 days.... it's been like that in germany for atleast 3 years (when i started jumping there) and you can actually pack your own reserve without training as long as you are the only one going to jump it......saw a guy do this once...perfectly legal there.......
