RyAnBoMb14 0 #1 August 19, 2013 Has anyone had a PD reserve 193 pack into a Mirage M5. On sizing for mirage a Optimum 193 is optimal and I know PDR's pack bigger than them.
theonlyski 8 #2 August 19, 2013 Mirage says that a PD-176 is optimal, I wouldn't suggest trying to cram a 193 into it. I've packed a rig from Mirage that says it's "EXTREMELY tight, requires skilled rigging" and I don't ever want to do it again. So, don't piss off your rigger. If you're ordering new gear, find the optimal fit and get that... Most the differences between one container size and another (right next to it) is almost impossible to spot at arms length."I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
gowlerk 2,216 #3 August 19, 2013 I have a customer who ordered a Mirage sized for a pd176, but through a mix up he was sent one sized for a op176 or a pd160. He had the brand new gear and really needed it so I packed it for him. It went in, but the stiffeners on the side flaps were bent and distorted out of shape, it was clear that the rig would be damaged so out it came. YMMV KenAlways remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
3mpire 0 #4 August 19, 2013 On Mirage's container sizing guide when they say "soft" I'm assuming that is the smallest size they would recommend? i.e. if they say a 170 is optimal and a 150 is soft, you wouldn't want to put a 135 in there (either main or reserve). Conventional wisdom I've heard is for most rigs you can fit three sizes in there, so if a 170 is optimal one size up or down is within reason?
mattjw916 2 #5 August 19, 2013 "optimal" can still mean tight in my experience on a Mirage, especially if it's a super-slippery new ZP canopy... even had a very experienced rigger complain about my reserve size once even though it's the "optimal" size for the container generally you can fit a range of sizes into containers but that's going to depend on the canopy... check out this article by PD for an explanation: http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/packvol.pdf also, from this doc: http://www.performancedesigns.com/packingchart.asp you can see that sq ft, even from the same vendor, does not mean you can just simply cram anything with the same number in the same container, e.g. a Vengeance 135 (airlocks) has a similar pack volume to a Pulse 170 (partially low bulk fabric) which is smaller than a Sabre 2 150 ("normal"). Of course the canopies all have various line types, shapes, fabric, and features. from personal experience I have had a Jedei 150, Nitro 150, Nitron 170, and a Safire 189 all in the same M5 sized Mirage G3 adjusting the closing loop length as appropriate with a PDR176 above them in my G4, M3 sized container, I have an R-Max 148 which my rigger complained about, and a Nitron 150 which I would consider "tight" but not oversized (and conforms to the container manufacturer's recommendations)... 3mpire 0 #6 August 19, 2013 Thanks for the links and the examples--good reading material and your experience jives with what my gut feeling was. I have an G3 sized M4 so I can relate.
