AggieDave 6 #5 July 14, 2002 If it didn't require swimming of using some sort of watercraft, it'd be fun to go to H-town for some Margaritas... (stupid rain)--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
AggieDave 6 #6 July 14, 2002 Do you have a power tool (that packing thingy made with the metal bar) or just pull up cords? When I started packing for a job I started using a power tool, you can damn near close anything with the leverage that gives you.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." freebird 0 #7 July 14, 2002 Oh.............No..... I do not have that........ I guess I need one........My hands have callouses on them only after about 10 min. of trying to close it......Im going to leave it open and have it shut at my DZ.
Lindsey 0 #8 July 14, 2002 If I were unable to close it without the aid of a "power tool" I might lengthen the closing loop a tad. Just my $.02......then go have that margarita. drenaline 0 #9 July 15, 2002 Use your knee, it caught air when you stowed the lines, if you put pressure with the knee in the middle of the d-bag (inside the container) that way you will squeeze the air out giving you that lil space you need to pass the closing loop. And then go drink some margaritas! HISPA 21 www.panamafreefall.com
AggieDave 6 #10 July 15, 2002 Usually, yes, but there can be packing variables in there also, packing big/packing small, that can make the world of difference. Even with a correctly sized closing loop, sometimes containers can be very hard to close, a power tool helps on those days. --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." michaelseddon 0 #13 July 15, 2002 Are you talking power tool as in one of those metal cylinders with the rod that you see people packing reserves with? How much would one of those set me back? Not being a large person closing containers can be rather hard at times
AggieDave 6 #14 July 15, 2002 Yeah, that's the one, we have them at my DZ for something like $15. Once you buy one, that's it, they last, the only thing that you'll have to do is replace the string every once in a while (I've done around 70 pack jobs with the one I have and its still doing fine).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AggieDave 6 #16 July 15, 2002 Quoteproper closing technique will help a lot more then any power tools If you're packing a lot, a closing pull tears the hell out of your hands and they start to fall apart pretty quickly. That and as the day wears on, you get tired, it gets harder and harder to keep a really good grip on a closing pull and close containers, sometimes. Basically the point wasn't to get flamed, the point of my original post was to say that if everything else is in order and you're still having problems getting it closed, one of those tools gives you an edge. Easier to grip, easier to get leverage with, easier on your hands and you'll find neat tricks that metal bar can do (for breaking rubberbands free of the bag when they just don't want to leave after breaking, for example). Do you *have* to have one? No, unless you're packing one of the new Sigma tandems, does it help otherwise? Yup, I never thought of getting one until I became a staff packer, now I wish I would have bought one a long time ago.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
