mountainman 0 #6 July 10, 2002 Viking.....that is just a regular sized bird. Probably about a foot wingtip to wingtip (spread out). If he got a hawk or falcon caught in the radiator like that, I would wonder how fast he drives to get it to squeeze through those holes. Ouch! Billo.....he saw the bird and saw it try to fly out of the way, however he didn't see it anywhere when he looked behind him. So, when he got to my house, he got out and checked it out. There it was. Although, my brother could have not been checking that channel and totally missed the call altogether. However, I think the bird was in restricted airspace. Anywhere 15' or below over a road should be considered "no-no" for our feathery friends (who don't need rigs or planes to fly). Yes, I'm tired. freeflir29 0 #14 July 10, 2002 Worked many a bird strike on B-52's and KC-135's. The B-52's were the worst. The wing area is huge in near the wing root. Once there was a hole so big that we could fit one of the small guys through it. I think that was an Osprey. Damn did that smell!!! I also had one that came through the radome, secret boxes, and firewall that ended up splattering on the right seaters feet inside the cock pit. They must have been hauling some ass!!! hisgoofyness 0 #16 July 10, 2002 I was stationed at Elmendorf, AFB when an E-3 Sentry (AWACS) plane went in immediately after take off. The crash was blamed on multiple bird hits on the two right engines, if I remember correctly. I think they said there was around 36 birds that were hit. The whole story sounded fishy to me. It was a horrific site. I was standing on the flight line and saw the whole thing happen. From the distance I couldn't see well enough to see birds though. I noticed when I was up there in 2000 that they have quite an agressive program to keep the birds away now. I guess they ingested so many birds that it flamed out the engines. I was threatened with an article 15 because of running over one on my way to work. People would literally stop in the middle of the road to let them cross. There would be hundreds of them around the flight line. Besides, they stink !!! hisgoofyness Goudha is for Buddha, and that's good enough for me!
