What makes a skydiver?

Recommended Posts

heres my philosophy..
actually first...what rgoper said! yea yea I like that;)

but just becuase you dont know it all doesnt mean you are not a skydiver. there is a first jump/tandem student(somewhere) who is planning on making more skydives. not only planning but actually doing it saving the money making the financial changes in the lifestyle....that is when a skydiver is born to me. form the first jump I did I knew I was a skydiver. when I told people I was a skydiver one word ALWAYS preceded it....STUDENT!
being a student didnt exclude me from being a skydiver. I just had little or NO knowledge about it. So to me I believe some one who has their heart set on jumping and takes measures to "stay current" you are a skydiver. now I am inkorea for the last year, no DZ. am I not a skydiver anymore?the stay current thing is not by choice not once did I ever say I used to be a skydiver. however I did say that I used to skydiove when I was in the states( followed by the comment about how much I miss it and will get high again as soon as I can)

someone who does one tandem and thats it...to me that person can say "I did a skydive/tandem"
but they are not a SKYDIVER. the word in itself insinuatues some form of currency. the "R" at the end makes you belive some one is actively involved. so for some one who jumped once and were satisfied with only one jump to say "I am a skydiver" is wrong IMHO.

I can't understand how someone could do ONE tandem or skydive, and not WANT to do this again!!!! The most incredible thing I have ever done! It changes your life, I don't know how or why, it just does!

I bet thats the general consensus here;)

Tandems actually make a lot of people nauseous. There are many theories for it. The way the harness fits, hanging forward of center under the canopy, motion sickness. In any case tandems really are not for everyone. If a person gets sick under the tandem they don't realize that it probably won't happen under their own canopy, unless they know some skydivers or the Tandem master explains it. Also many people just don't say anything about it so no one knows.

The person who comes out to the dz and makes a tandem is not a skydiver. They're tourist passengers or cargo unless the tandems are part of a student program geared at obtaining a license in the sport. Being a tandem passenger does not make someone a skydiver anymore than making a thousand posts on dropzone.com does.;)

A lot of it is based on the motion of freefall... the canopy ride, the harness cutting off blood flow unless its a newer stlye harness, unusual pressure from the harness, your bodies reaction to the experieces it just underwent and then the CG things too. I've talked to a TE about this and newer canopies and tandem systems address this pretty good, but it still is up to each persons body to determine if it can handle it.

I have seen tandems toss their lunch.. and others walk away nothing at all different. I've heard of some blacking out and others waiting till their feet touch the ground to do that.

A person that only has done a tandem or two and has not at least pursued training at a DZ for thier solos has no room to call them self a skydiver. Some one in AFF.... in a way can, but you really are a skydiver when you are in the door, look out, realize how good life is and let it all go and go out of the door with a freefall to the canopy ride...
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

It has a lot to do with how tight the TM makes the shoulder attatchments on the student harness. If you watch the RWS tandem certification video they make note of that. Too tight and the student has an increased chance of experiencing black outs and nausea.
