tkhayes 348 #1 July 3, 2002 OK, the Florida State is telling us that Sales tax is payable on skydives as they are equivalent to "recreation" or "Amusement rides" I need: 1. Input on other DZ's and whether they have run into this before, 2. Whether or not you pay sales tax in your state, name of DZ and State 3. anything else that might help - This can blow up into a state-wide things and no one wants to pay sales tax and have their jump prices increase. The main angle is that flight on training type jumps is not taxable, so conceivably all jumps could become training jumps in one way or another. FL is pursuing this as it is a very high dollar figure, and worth their while to pursue. please send info to me directly tkhayes@tkhayes.com or tkhayes@skydivecity.com any good consumer lawyers out there? rgoper 0 #2 July 3, 2002 consider the "tax benifit" if you will, for your sky diving. mosts states allow for "entertainment" write-offs. especially if you own your own business.--Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"
PhillyKev 0 #3 July 3, 2002 Is your DZ a club? CK charges a yearly membership fee (or a daily fee if you're just visiting) to all jumpers. It's not much, don't remember exactly but like $15 a year. I would think that as a club your jump ticket is a cost associated with the activities of the club and not a "sale of an amusement ride". I'm just guessing but would be worthwhile to look at. rgoper 0 #4 July 3, 2002 no my dz is not a "club" but in any event any further conversation(s) of "tax breaks" for the "sport, and entertainment" of sky diving, will be very limited in the forums. however, if you like pm me, i could offer some advice.--Richard-- "We Will Not Be Shaken By Thugs, And Terroist"
quade 4 #5 July 3, 2002 This looks like a job for the USPA. Certainly you've already contacted them about this -- right?quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
pilotdave 0 #6 July 3, 2002 The jump is free, it's just the plane ride up ya pay for, right? I haven't found most of the rides up very amusing at all. Most of the time half the people are falling asleep and the other half are complaining about a fart. Assuming the tickets are for the plane ride only, and the plane is operating under part 91, well, wouldnt all part 91 commercial ops be charged sales tax? Ok, I'm not helping... tkhayes 348 #7 July 3, 2002 yes, have spoken to them, not really their issue as it is state wide, not federal, but they offered up the 'trraining jumps' angle, thanks to Ed Scott for that much,
PhillyKev 0 #8 July 3, 2002 Thanks, Dave. Since you put it that way we're all going to have to start paying allthe taxes and surcharges we do on commercial flights...nice job
pilotdave 0 #9 July 3, 2002 Dont forget gate fees. Not cheap to park a plane at the loading area. Dave
quade 4 #10 July 3, 2002 Quote . . . not really their issue as it is state wide, not federal . . . That's rediculous! Don't they realize that if this passes in Florida it would set a nationwide precident? I think you might also want to talk with the folks over at AOPA.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
skydiverbrian 0 #11 July 3, 2002 Maybe someone at Pasco County can help out. I'm sure that raising rates or charging tax will affect business negatively. Pasco might be interested in keeping people jumping there. Maybe you can start calling Zhills a skydiving club and sell 20-minute memberships that include a "welcome to the club" plane ride. In a world full of people, only some want to fly... isn't that crazy! --Seal
skydiverbrian 0 #12 July 3, 2002 Quotewe're all going to have to start paying allthe taxes and surcharges we do on commercial flights Not really, since we don't land with the plane. So you'll only have to pay the tax if you get skeered and ride the plane down. Derekbox 0 #13 July 3, 2002 Where is this info coming from? I normally take word of mouth with a HUGE grain of salt (no offense, I dont challenge your creditability, I just rather see something in writing before I worry to much). Besides, even if it were true, how long would it take to actually happen.... Derek

Michele 1 #18 July 3, 2002 I actually will be starting an advertising campaign with skydiving as it's core - should run about 5 months. This will make most of my jump expenses write-offs...my CPA is looking into whether or not I can buy gear and write it off....hee hee....of course, coming up with the capital to actually buy gear is a whole 'nother story...Dr's bills come first... tkhayes 348 #19 July 3, 2002 if we wait untl it is in writing - it will be too late, do you really want to pay sales tax on all your jumps?
dmddave 0 #20 July 3, 2002 In NM, we have a small non-profit club and we have to pay a 6.375% local tax and a 3.275% airport usage fee tax. We're trying to figure a way to get out of it so we don't have to raise jump prices but so far, no luck.

kingbunky 3 #23 July 4, 2002 what sort of percentage are you talking about? our dz (in canada) has to charge our 'harmonized sales tax (HST)' on everything now. i just payed $995 for my pff course, plus $150 tax. student jumps are $57.50 ($50 + $7.50 HST) which includes gear rental. it sux!!!"Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart."
