Did my Compaq blow up ?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help ?

Last night, when I turned it on, it just beeped 3 times, then .......nothing. I tried it 4-5 times last night, and it did the same thing. :(:(:(

Went to the Compaq/HP website, but couldn't find this listed anywhere on the site, and my search turned up zilch. Is it toast ????? >:(>:(>:(

Thanks,

Don (computer idiot)

Don, are you sure those aren't the voices in your head? Did you forget to take your medicine again? ;)

Thanks, Kevin...

what does "reseat RAM" mean ? (if it is that one....but all the beeps were the same length)....the only other listing was for a bad video card, but that was just replaced two months ago.

One of the IT guys here told me to turn it off, them nake sure all my connections were tight -- which they were.

Maybe I'm just too ignorant to own a PC :)

Naw........when I take my meds, my mind entertains me quite nicely. When I'm off my meds, I need the great witicisms and humor I find on this site to keep me going through the day. :)

Reseat RAM means to open up the case, remove your RAM chips and put them back in. They may not be getting a good connection. Just because your vid card is new doesn't mean it can't go bad. I get computer equipment all the time that is either faulty brand new, or fails a few weeks later.

Take it out and put it back in. You'll want to do that with the video card too. That might actually be the problem - the older compaqs had a problem with "heat creep" - cards, memory, etc would work their way out of their slot.
Think of it as pulling all your cables off your spark plug and dist. cap, and putting them back on. Sometimes it helps, usually doesn't, but makes you feel better because you did something. :D

ya might want to take some ESD precautions while playing with the RAM!!! if you don't have a good ground cable/strap, at least 'discharge' yourself by touching a metal part inside the PC before you touch the chips/cards.

... yeah, then find a big, fluffy cat to pet repeatedly, really fast.

hmm... "pet repeatedly" and "discharge yourself" used in the same thread..... now is about the time the clay jokes start flying.

How did Clay become the dz.com whipping boy anyway?

Yes, that was my very first thought....that she had sent me some kind of virus !

Thanks for all the tips, guys...hopefully they'll work tonight when I get home. Or else I'll make the headlines tomorrow...."High Point Man Dies of Massive Electrical Shock" or "14 Computer Help-Line Employees Die Under Mysterious Circumstances".....:D
