Push me over the edge....

I didn't wade in from the shallow end. My dad chucked me in the deep end and yelled, "Swim! I know you can do it." Sure enough, I did.

Thats funny.....I had the exact same dad...threw us in and said "swim for the side!!!!"......... Now I have a mental image of a dad throwing his kid out of a plane yelling "PULL......I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!!!"...:S!

Ok, it must be pointed out that I did 31 tandems before I did my AFF, but I had 2 years to kill before they'd legally let me jump, so I honestly didn't have much of a say in the matter.
You'd think that, after 2 years and 31 tandems, AFF'd be a walk in the park....but when my Dad drove me out to the DZ that morning, I was shaking from head to toe the whole way there.
It all went ok, I went up, did an almost flawless stage 1, sweet canopy control and a stand up landing. AFF first is all good, but a tandem lets you get a feel for the air before you actually go up there with some responsibility.
If you freak out on your first go at freefall, you get it out of your system and when you do your AFF you know what to expect.
I actually new by muscle memory when it was 45000ft, I still do. I've done one tandem since I did my Aff, and it sacred the shit out of me!
I hate having anyone else in control now!
Blue skies, good luck, hope to hear soon how your tandem goes.

ps The "conquering" comments were to see if you really were interested or if you were another whuffo with the kind of attitude that saw a guy, who'd done his stage 1 AFF the weekend before, tell our DZ manifestor, "I've done my AFF now, so I'd like to take my wife for a tandem on the next jump...." ;-P
pps Skydiving is not viewable/extreme enough for the X Games, but they loved the idea of having BASE jumping as a demo sport. Pity about the cost of insuring it! Grrrr!

Hey sinkster, if you do a tandem as your first jump it DOES count towards your license... I did 4 tandems and they supplemented my AFF levels 1 through 3. When I transitioned over to the actual AFF course I started at 4.
"pull high! It's lower than you think..."

Yeah, S/L is the way to go! None of that pussy AFF stuff these kids today are doing:D. I remember climbing to the strut, looking back at the JM, seeing her nod as the signal to let go... and immediately after letting go, while being blacked out for those couple of seconds from the sensory overload, a small voice in my head asking: "Why did you let go of the plane?". And then, the good canopy over my head... If I only could have another first jump...

I get the sneeking suspicion that there are a lot of enthusiastic skydivers responding to your post, yet very few "pros." *no offense guys!* We are all excited about people getting into our sport, BUT, personally, I think that the best advice is to talk to an instructor @ your local DZ and ask them. That IS what they are there for!! Ask them the same as you have asked us, do your own research (as someone else already mentioned), and leave it to your heart! There is nothing scarier than someone doing what we do for the wrong reasons--wait--even more scary is someone continuing to do what we do for the wrong reasons! It has to mean something to YOU--nobody else!
Best Wishes--Kim
