BEER CUTAWAY!

Recommended Posts

Happened yesterday evening, Launched a six-way that went well save one of us going low, broke at 4,500, dumped at 3,500, looked up it discover Loki had helped me pack with a line group crossed over- Induced a nice spin, didn't take me but a second at most to decide to go to plan b- I am so glad I go through the cutaway procedures so often, everythng seemed so fluid and natural! In seconds I was under my bright yellow PD 160 reserve, located my freebag and main, fortunately everything unscathed and easy to recover- I did a couple practice flares then I even stood up the landing! I am quite pleased with myself but I sure don't want a repeat performance. Took a while get over the rush, talked to some folks about the cause of the mal - (Packing error on my part-) Then off to score two cases of beer - Quite an experience! I'm kinda glad it happened, but sure don't want it to happen again!
Blue ones, everyone!!!

Congratulations! You know, I was watching this Brit skydiving partner of mine practice his cutaway pantomime and I noticed he did two moves with each hand. He practiced ripping the velcro loose and then pulling the cables free. I don't recall practicing the cutaway that way, but later I saw on a post here that Bill Von or some other skygod noted that a jumper had to take two attempts at the cutaway handle because the forgot to break the velcro first.
Did you even notice getting the velcro free of the pillow and handle or did you just Incredible Hulk them both loose?
Anyway, congratulations. I'm statistically 106 jumps away from my first cutaway, but I'm hoping other brave souls step up and take my turn when it comes. Our S&TA has almost 2000 jumps and no cutaways, so it can happen.

Good points Duece. Muscle Memory Folks thats all it is. Hesitation should not even be a word in a skydivers vocabulary........
It has been almost two years since my last cutaway, but i am ready every jump. Almost 1,500 jumps and only 2 total cutaways.

"Brit skydiving partner of mine practice his cutaway pantomime"
Yeah in Brit land, a lot of us are taught to peel, then pull the cutaway.......
I chopped 4 times now and really can't remember the first three, but on thelast one I definitely peeled, paused then punched out the cutaway handle.....I actually wanted to film it , but was suffering a battery mal as well as a misbehaving canopy.....:(

Congratulations on doing what you were trained to do! Glad everything went smoothly. Did you hear the "ChaChink" noise?? It seemed to me after my first that was the most memorable part of it.
After 3 cutaways in my first 6 months, I believe i am current. Now a year into it and i have been cutaway free [knock on wood *here*]
My hat's off to the patient packers at Skydive Lake Wales who taught me how to avoid my fuckups. Mike X, Whenever i get the chance, there's a case of cold ones from A.T. for the lessons!

I've been replaying it in mind all day- I didn't actually "think" through the steps, like I did when I first learned the procedure over a year ago- I recall the sound of the velcro peeling, but I guess you could say I sort of muscled it off-
I did hear the "ka-chink" - had a very brief moment of deja-vu- Weird- Maybe in a past life? NAAAAAH-!
Funny thing- the first thing that ran through my mind when I saw what I had, was, "how the hell did I let myself pack this shit?" That took 1/1000th of a second- then the hands went to motion-
For some reason I kinda have a new sense of "belonging-"
-Random thoughts on handle-touching-

I touch my handles often! I like it! I reccommend it to everyone! Do it early and often!
I like to watch people touch thier handles - (Girls? Can I watch you?)
I'll let you touch mine if you let me touch yours-
Touching your handles in front of people is cool- Especially if they're newbies!
Didn't forget my rigger- He was there to witness the event! First case was for him!
Hardest part of the whole ordeal (after the fact-) was telling the little lady when I got home - (she is always scared for me-)
Thanks for all the support, folks - You're a great group! I luv ya all!
BLUE SKIES!
Otters Forever!

No, this is Mike McKinlay at Lake Wales that i'm talking about. He's usually a videographer, but he took the time to teach me to pack properly. It made a huge difference in my cutaway rate! I even went on to teach others (that are willing to listen to me after my bad record) some of his tricks and tips *before anyone jumps on me, the riggers were watching!* ;)
