Two canopies out poll.

Recommended Posts

i personally have not experienced this, but nonetheless have my plans made for the event. if i have two out, and their "biplane" or "side by side" i will steer the tallest most dominant canopy. but if i'm in a "downplane" i'll ride it down to 500 or so agl, then release the main, and land the reserve.

I'm guessing he got this after reading the SIM and not fully understanding it. The point is, it takes more than reading the SIM to survive in this sport.

Please don't guess, just ask me and wait for answer, I might and am a newbie in the sport but am not an ignorant that likes to talk without knowing, if I said D/C the RSL is because of something and skydivemonkey just explained it before me.
Thanks monkey man.

Richard,
Why would you wait until 500 ft to cut away? I'm not trying to flame you (if I were, I'd misspell your name again ;) Why wouldn't you get rid of as soon as possible?

If you're gonna do something silly like riding it down, migh as well ride it down to 100 feet and then cutaway to get a nice surf.... ;)

We have a die hard Racer jumper that is looking at other rigs as a replacement for his old racer. If the DZO is a dealer or has a gear store on site, any make of rig is popular with the jumpers. Most places its Javelins, others its Mirage, Wings, Infinity or Reflex. Its all clicks....

We don't have a DZO or a gear store. He just asked if anyone had a Racer anymore and I was just responding. They are definitely the most popular at my DZ though there are also lots of other brands. I don't have a Racer. I have an Infinity and love it.

At about 30 jumps or so, I fought a sniveling opening...slider up and the risers trying to go into line twists. During the fight I lost track of altitude, burned it down to about 1200 feet. Just as the canopy opened and the slider came down I felt the AAD kick on my back. A cypress will fire higher if you are feet to Earth.
Container was a Racer with the RSL disconnected, no fear of chopping it due to that. However being new, I did not know if the risers were crossed. So I sat there and watched the reserve come up nice and neat behing the main. They played nice and I let them land wherever they wanted. Which just happened to be a big farm field.
Had they gone into a downplane, the main would have been chopped as soon as possible.
Potentially bad situation came out fine. Scared me and as I result I like to pay attention to my altitude a bit closer than when I started jumping. As a general rule I like dumping a bit higher than back then as well. About 3000 ft AGL is my comfort zone.

I had an FXC fire on my 50th jump. It was a wierd feeling, since I was already under my main and flying it, brakes unstowed, when the reserve opened. My canopy rocked and surged forward for a second, then I was back underneath it. Felt kind of strange, so I looked up and saw a LOT of material over my head. Looked again and realized I had 2 out. My first thought was, "Oh shit, this can't be good!" and my next thought was, "Ronco says I can land this!" (We had covered this in my AFP ground school) I had a bi plane, nice and stable, and I ended up landing (VERY softly) in a yard across the road from the dz.
I was still on rental (student) gear at the time, and that was the LAST time I ever jumped a rig with an FXC instead of a cypres. (They were already in the process of replacing all the FXCs with cypresses, so it was easy enough to choose a rig with a cypres instead.)

>Does anyone even buy Racers anymore?

I have a Racer as a backup rig; I like it. What you see depends on where you jump. Kapowsin has a lot of Infinitys; Perris has a lot of Reflexes; Florida DZ's tend to have more Racers.
