They're actually causing more traffic to back up by doing that. Actually, that BS.. it's the cutter in front that is making someone and everyone behind them hit their brakes and bring everything to a stop.... ScottishJohn 25 #27 June 14, 2002 Try driving in the middle of the road with your car straddling both lanes , this will make it difficult for the "Cutter" to pass you and the pearcon behind you won't be able to overtake you either. =================================I can smell your noodles !=================================
kingbunky 3 #28 June 14, 2002 people that do that p!ss me off as well. i used to drive a tractor trailer through the northeast, and what go me was the one's who would try that at a toll booth. trucks generally have to go through the far right gate, and people would fly up the shoulder and then try to cut in. one time i was about 20 vehicles back from the toll booth and saw someone running up the shoulder so i pulled over and took about half of it up, and the guy never slacked off, drove right down into the grass to go around me and then tried to cut in. funny thing was, nobody let him in and he was still sitting there when the state trooper came up the shoulder behind him and (i'm assuming) wrote him up for driving on the shoulder. i laughed.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~bunkyget crazy, before it gets you. jfields 0 #29 June 14, 2002 "Cutters" annoy the hell out of me, and they are very common around Washington, DC. There are a number of ways to deal with them:1. Absolutely refuse to let them in.2. Block half of their lane.3. Find a fellow "Anti-Cutter" and one of you form a rolling roadblock in the lane that is going to close. Right before the merge, you let them in, but no cutters.4. Run the bastards off the road. Did I say that? Justin
scottbre 0 #30 June 14, 2002 There is nothing quite as vindicating as watching someone who tried to disregard the "rules of the road" get hosed on getting back into the flow of traffic. I will do everything in my power to make that happen. The most common instances that I can think of where this occurs when I am driving is when there is a line of faster moving cars in the left(fast) lane that are passing cars in right lane, and some "super intelligent" idiot decides he can save time zooming up the right lane til he's right behind the slower cars and then trying to cut back over into the left lane. When I see this happening, I will do my best to stay beside this car or in a position that won't let them get back over, all the way up until they have to slow down because of the slower traffic. This is most fun when they really speed up and end up having to slam on the brakes behind a slow semi or something, and then I go cruising past in the lane I am supposed to be in. (You know a few choice curse words were just uttered in that guy's/girl's car. One more thing while we're on this subject. If someone is going slower than the traffic behind them in the fast lane, and won't move over when the traffic (me) comes up behind him. I will stay right behind him for a minute to give him a chance to see me and move. If he still doesn't move, I will past him quickly on the right and then do a sharp lane change back in front of him as soon as I am past.Needless to say, there are a lot of stupid drivers in Indiana. The 4th paperclip didn't say much, but I could tell that it was still the smartass of the bunch... JDBoston 0 #31 June 14, 2002 Your post seems a little self-contradictory.... perhaps it was intentional? I constantly do the second thing you referred to (pass people on the right because they're going too slow in the fast lane), but it seems to me that if someone is doing the same thing to me, well, it probably means I'm going too slow in the fast lane....Joe

skreamer 1 #33 June 14, 2002 What pisses me off here in London is cars using the bus lane to cut up the regular lane. There is supposed to be an £80 fine for people misusing the bus lane but it never gets enforced, as a result these road-hogs slow things down for the rest of us when they cut back in AND they slow down the buses. wildblue 7 #34 June 14, 2002 Quoteyeah .. Same here..... Up here, they'll fly down the break down lane to get off at the exit, so if I see em coming, I'll pull half way into it.Umm.. why? If traffic's all jammed up, and they're taking that exit, why not use the break-down lane to get to their exit - as long as they're not trying to cut in front of a bunch of people. They're not slowing you down, and if anything, they're helping by being one less car in the jam - that's part of the reason motorcycles are allowed to "lane split" in CAI do hate it when people take the fast lane and try to cut at the last second. Every day, on my way to work, the interstate I take makes an almost 90 degree turn to the right, but only two lanes of it, the left lane becomes an exit at that same time. So the right two lanes are always bumper to bumper, and there's always a handful of idiots that want to stay in the left lane until the last possible second, which slows the people in the middle lane down (and causes TONS of accidents there) AND slows me down, because when someone doesn't let them in, they sit there, stopped, in the left lane (I'm staying in th left lane to take the exit) ... jackasses.Oh… you wanted the cheese sticks as an appetizer ?? scottbre 0 #35 June 14, 2002 QuoteYour post seems a little self-contradictory....Might seem that way, but it really isn't. When I end up having to pass someone on the right, it is when there is noone in the right lane that the slow person in front of me might be passing. They are generally just unaware. Usually on a cell phone or just stupid (synonymous in my mind). Even in this case I stay behind them for much longer than should be necessary for them to see I'm behind them and move, and if they are still just piddling along, yapping on their cell phone and not paying attention, I buzz around them in the right lane if it is clear. The 4th paperclip didn't say much, but I could tell that it was still the smartass of the bunch... jfields 0 #36 June 14, 2002 Skreamer,We have High Occupancy Vehicle lanes as well, on certain roads during rush hour. Cars with less than a specified number of people (2 or 3) are subject to ticketing. But I see it happen all the time. People have even been busted for driving with mannekins. Still annoying, but at least that is funny. Justin
JDBoston 0 #37 June 14, 2002 Aha. But to take it one step further: if someone has enough space to speed up in the right lane and then cut left to pass you, then YOU should actually have been in the right lane to begin with. The left lane is for passing only, so the part of the left lane you're entitled to begins a few car lengths before the car you're going to pass, and ends a few car lengths after it. The left lane is not simply for people who are accelerating relative to the cars in the right lane. So if you're using the left lane properly, and getting back into the right lane after you've passed each car, then it should be impossible or at least horrendously, obviously unsafe for anyone in the right lane to try and pass you WHILE you're in the left lane. Make sense?Joe

But to take it one step further: if someone has enough space to speed up in the right lane and then cut left to pass you, then YOU should actually have been in the right lane to begin with. Right, but I am referring to when there is a whole line of cars in the left lane who are all passing slower traffic in the right lane, and someone decides they can buzz past the line of cars that are waiting to pass the slower right lane, and then try to cut into the line that is already trying to past. All this does is manage to slow the passing lane down even further. But yes, if you have no one in front of you and you are in the left lane, you should get the hell out of the way of someone faster than you who might be coming up behind. The 4th paperclip didn't say much, but I could tell that it was still the smartass of the bunch... I hope you have a shitty car and don't mind damage - You have a good chance of it- If the road is necking down to one lane and you're stuck in the wrong lane, if you're cool, use a turn signal, and don't try to force your way in. I'll probably let you in- If you come up from WAY behind and try to shoce your nose in ahead of me with no siganls or anything, IF you make it in you're going to have a hard time- Oh, and I'm not predjudiced- I DON'T CARE WHO I HIT! There's a few of you out there - Maybe we didn't swap paint, but you've had a trip on the shoulder! Be cool behind the wheel, man, and I'll be cool to you!
