Zlew 0 #1 June 14, 2002 Anyone else think we should rename Parachutist "Kevin Gibson Magazine"?Z
SkymonkeyONE 4 #2 June 14, 2002 I gotta tell you that the only reason he has so much stuff in there is because nobody else sends in anything of consequence. It is not hard to get published in parachutists. The problem, though, is that they will not publish anything that has been posted or published elsewhere. Michelle Lesser sent some stuff and had it kicked back because it was already done here. At least that is the way I recall it.ChuckMy webpage HERE

Michele 1 #5 June 14, 2002 HI, Chuck***You recall correctly, Skymonkey. And I sent the same stuff to Skydive Mag, but it was kicked back for the same reason. Neither mag understands that a) while there are a lot of people here, I doubt they all read my stuff, and b) some jumpers don't come here...sigh...Ciels and Pinks-MicheleLife is what you make it; always was, always will be.~Grandma Moses~
Snowbird 0 #6 June 14, 2002 Michele, lots of publishers consider work posted on the internet as having already been published. I frequent a writer's chat group as well, and we are quite careful about not posting finished work that we might one day want to submit to a publisher. It sucks, but they make the rules
slotperfect 7 #7 June 14, 2002 I recently sent a letter to be included in Parachutist. I also sent it to Skydiving Magazine. Mike from that publication asked me where else I had shared it. I guess to get the best of both worlds, next time I would choose exactly which publication I wanted to be published in, wait until it showed up in the mag, then post it here or elsewhere. No harm in that, it just takes longer to get it out.Respectfully,SP
Michele 1 #8 June 14, 2002 Quotewe are quite careful about not posting finished work that we might one day want to submit to a publisher. What's really funny is that I had no idea about any of that. Truth? Until my experience on DZ.com, I had not ever even considered myself a writer (and not sure I do now, either)...and had not written anything which I would consider of publishing value... as for them making the rules, too true. But I suppose to play their game, I have to follow their rules...but where can I buy the "rulebook"? IMGR2 0 #9 June 14, 2002 Hey Chuck,I know for a fact when I participated in Project Horizon at Elsinore that Missy Nelson spent the entire five days writing a story and interviewing participants. When I recieved last months issue and saw that there were a few pics and one paragraph, I have to say I was quite disappointed.I am going to have to disagree with you, that no one sends anything in. I have seen it many times and have heard people complain when they send a letter or article in it gets hacked to pieces and is published totally out of context. A young lady just this past weekend told me she sent a letter to the editor and it got published although it looked nothing like the original letter she had in her hand.Hope this isn't true across the board.Bryan
cliffharris 0 #10 June 14, 2002 speaking of Kevin Gibson: I just took an HP canopy skills class that he taught. I was very pleased with it. Actually he has developed an entire curriculum including an instructional manual for his class. I'd highly recommend it to anybody that is looking to grow their canopy skills. It doesn't matter what your skill level is, he will tailor the curriculum to your needs whether it's hp landings, accuracy, general flight etc. I'm sure any interested parties could contact him via the uspa website. I'd fall on my head for you.
Snowbird 0 #11 June 14, 2002 QuoteI have to follow their rules...but where can I buy the "rulebook"?It's called 'Writer's Market 2002', a big thick book with submission guidelines for publishers across North America, including most small specialty publications. It has the general 'rules' and also the preferences for individual publishers. It's usually available at the local library. And as far as 'being a writer'; do you write? Do you enjoy writing? If those two answers were 'yup' then you are a writer. Just not a paid writer.
Michele 1 #12 June 14, 2002 Hey, Tina!Quote'Writer's Market 2002' Way too cool...I was being facetious, but hey, now I can get the rulebook! Thanks!Quote do you write? Do you enjoy writing? If those two answers were 'yup' then you are a writer. I can answer "yup" to both those questions. So I suppose I am, among other things (both paid and unpaid), I am also a writer! sangiro 25 #14 June 14, 2002 Have your friend send the full Elsinore article with photos to me and I'll publish it all.... .....and long after the copy of the magazine with your article has disappeared at the bottom of a pile of old yellow has-been publications, newbies to the sport will still find your article online, read, and enjoy it.Safe swoopsSangiro

He writes some really great stuff. I have read the " Jumping The Ram Air" series so many times I could probably recite them all! And his more recent series on flying high performance canopies is excellent too. He really has a lot to offer and is just a great guy too. If I saw KG Mag, I'd buy it!dove
 MiataDRM 0 #18 June 17, 2002 I'm sorry I missed you at Orange today...I would have jumped w/ ya! I challenge anyone out there to name a better writer specializing in skydiving subjects. Hmm, let me help you--there isn't one. As a magazine editor (of a national mag with different subject matter, but very similar content), I can tell you I constantly search for quality work and solicit a many "experts" for stories, yet I am consistently left with huge piles of trite, incoherent ramblings and tangent-filled crap. There are lots of folks who know the ins and outs of Subject X, however most have such deplorable communication skills it takes them a chapter to say a paragraph.Similar to the fact that just having a camera doesn't make you a photographer, just because you have a keyboard, don't think you are a writer. I know Rahlmo is the USPA's Director of Communication, but he has an editor who decides editorial direction and monthly content of the most professional magazine in skydiving. I can tell you that his stories are there not for ego, they're in the magazine because he has awesome connections and he can write.I am gonna throw this disclaimer out there as well: I did every student jump up to the coach jumps of the new ISP with Rahlmo. He ended up as my Skydive U coach at the Search and I completed his Canopy Skool about a month ago. The guy has probably forgotten more about skydiving than I will ever know, but damn it, I will continue to pick his brain and read his work!!mikeThe Lord giveth and the M-79 taketh away.
